Hi , just starting out with the fly , have been going to fox pond and enjoyed it . Just wanted opinions on the fly rod and reel for 12 quid at aldi . I do know you get what you pay for but think might see me through summer till i sure i want to spend real cash . Any thoughts ??

james its more important to have a better rod than reel mate it will aid your casting so scrimp on reel but try and get best rod you can afford.

never know they might be alright but with it being in more sections and being so cheap it probably has a rubbish action, which is really what you need for efficient casting. you're probs best off getting a second hand fly rod for say £20-50 and picking up a reel second hand for a fiver. good luck let us know what it's like if you do go for it, i just had a look at it, might be handy just to keep in the boot that!

like bigtel says i would give it a miss a decent rod will aid your casting with the cheap rod from aldi you will be doing loads of false casting where as a decent action rod will pick up your line and get it on the water in less casts to much false casting not only tires your arms but on small stillwaters spooks the fish you can maybe get away with it on the bigger resivours buy cheap pay twice invest in a better rod thier is still some canny kits out thier airflo do 1 which is not bad for the money in fact if you come to mine i,ll give you a fairly decent rod for nothing it is a 7/8 weight here is my number 07716270335 regards stan
