Alternative Baits

I have been browsing the posts on this board and on the old NESA site and I was wondering if anyone uses baits other than crab, rag or lug - How do other baits compare with these?

Although it has been referred to as the \"poor mans crab\", mussel is brilliant bait IMHO. A nice sized bait of about 4 or 5 gently (but firmly)secured with elastic thread - excellent bait for codling - particularly from the rocks during Winter.

Also use squid a lot, too. 3 or 4 good sized lug on a 4/0 Viking with a strip of skinned squid on the tip and lashed up and around the lug with elastic - crackin\' mix (if the fish are there to appreciate it...lol)

Jim who used to post a while ago had decent catches with clam, razorfish is also worth a pop but the main alternative bait / attractor was ultrabite last year! wonder how that\'s fairing up?

i have used many different baits in the past but one thing i do look at is where i am going i.e. if i was fishing flambourgh and there had been a northerly blow on i would deffinatly take mussel with me as there are beds of them there so they would have been smashed up same as on a beach if there is razor beds then they would be taken
but i always take black lug and i have seen it out fish crab but other days nothing but crab will do
it is always a hard choice but looking at whats around at the venue can help :o
