Anglers collecting peelers will soon need a permit

Strange what you said about a net Alan. I tried it once, staked it out, nice bit of gather in it. Not a single flaming crab. Almost got a black eye for me troubles as the lad whoose traps I set it against waded into his traps and got caught up in my net. Word went round he was going to murder who ever set it. Obviously I denied any knowledge and declared anyone to set such a net to be a complete idiot.

springs i knew a bloke who fished for eels with nets and when i was down the river as a junior he used to give me baskets full of crabs to check. you were lucky if you got one peeler in a basket of 100+ crabs which were maily doggers.

funny Ninga, he set traps to collect crabs that you could easy fall in or over and he complained about you doing the same thing. Apparently to set a net like that there is a proper way of doing it. Mind do not know anybody who does it or has done it until now.

tad touchy, wouldnt be surprised if they accused you of netting salmon. Would not advise setting any form of net in an estuary to be honest

so what would you do when the day comes when the environment agency wander down the river, see loads of old tyres, sorry traps, and decided a clean up is called for and remove them all for being an \'environmental hazard\'??

be the first place they\'ll look if a licence is introduced, lets just wait next to all these tyres and lift the first person that happens along

the tyre removal thing might sound far fetched but has happened already, my mates in scotland use em, and have doen for years. talk of a marine national park comes up and lo and behold they all dissapear

Could also \"do\" them for fly tipping if they say \"there my tyres\"
Got a bit of grief last year of some local kn#b at Blyth, complaining I had \"done\" his tyres, got myself out of the mud and asked \"what the f#ck are you going to do about it\" \"ehh well there my tyres\" \"then put your name on so I\'ll know next time\".I had\'nt done his tyres because a young\'un had beat me to it :o ;)
Like Bri H says why bother laying traps and tyres when theres plenty of places to collect them else where,i got a load today and never even got dirty ;)

silvers not a saint just a reasonable angler enjoying his sport without causing myself or anyone else stress. the reason i fish is for peace and quiet. being able to mix with others with a similar intrest and to relax. this includes collecting bait which i see as exercise.
if every time i went for crabs i got stressed about someone in \"my traps\" i would have had a heart attack by now.
im no saint or angel and yes believe it or not i do have my bad points but one of them is not to go shouting at others and becoming angry at others for trying to enjoy there sport by collecting bait from a very public area.
i said at the start i didnt want to stur things up and i dont but i cannot stand the mentallity of others who put traps down the river and expect no one to ever do them its just not right!!!
as mentioned earlier it is polite if you know someones coming down not to go in the traps or if someones there not to go in but if the tides dropped and no ones in it must be seen as fair game.
also as mentioned earlier i have been down the river for many years collecting bait and enjoying myself and over the years have witnessed numerous different people claiming different parts of the river for themselfs knowing fine well theyve never put a trap in or maintained the traps in there lives. this happens time and time again and you normally find its people trying to top up there pay or dole money.
i have realised from this posting that different rivers seem to have different rules so before people come onto this site insulting me and others by saying that i havent got a clue or that i must be a saint please understand that will live in a culture where different people have different ideas in life of whats important and whats not. and one thing i will not be stressed about is someone doing \" my traps\"

sorry if this post offends people or if people think im unreasonable but it is my opinion although i understand from previous discussions with anglers and obviously from the postings on this site its not most other anglers opinion. (nothing wrong with being in the minority).

please if one things come out of this posting and the insults ive received think about the next time you go down the river and start shouting threats and abuse at a young novice angler about how the traps belong to you how your effecting 1 your health 2 the future of our sport! :D

please feel free to leave comment as as i say this is my opinion rightly or wrongly and it would be intresting to hear from other members on the site.

soap box away!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

a few times I\'ve heard the immortal line \"thems my crabs you\'ve got there\" having ferreted around some stinking mankiy old health hazard, I mean tyres, sorry I meant to say traps.

\"so have these crabs got your name on em?\"

\"err no\"

\"are they homing crabs that If i set free will scurry madly back to your hovel, past the playground you built for them in your garden out of a scrap car with no wheels, old fridge and stinking matress?\"

\"err no\"

\"well, If you call them by name will they come to your side obediently\"

\"then they are not your crabs\"

\"trying to be funny?\"?

\" no, if I was trying to be funny I\'d just tell you to fuck off home cos your missing Tricia and the Tellytubbies on daytime tv\"

And if you tell me they\'re you\'re \'traps\' cos you sell them to tackle shops - get a fuckin licence and pay tax on your earnings like the rest of us

here\'s a thought though, next time you see one of the \'they\'re my crabs\' brigade, fishing where, you fancy fishing, tell him thats your rock he\'s sat on and their your fish he\'s catching. I\'m sure he\'ll understand and move along without causing a rumpus!

Hope I haven\'t gerneralised there!

I have got a few dozen tyres down at the middens , if I am not down due to work , holidays or just laziness , then I expect the other lads who have provided and dug in ( repeatedely ) the other tyres on the beach to help themselves to any crabs that may be hiding in the tyre\'s that I have supplied . I don\'t expect any Tom Dick or Harry to come down to the beach and start helping themselves to the crab in the tyre\'s . By all means look through the rocks , but leave the tyre\'s to those who have put the time and energy into setting them . All I am looking for is enourgh crabs to fish each weekend at Seahouses or Eyemouth and maybe 100 for the winter .

I hate seeing shed loads of tyres littering the river mouths, It\'s a disgrace. Dad why\'s all them tyres in the water, oh horrible lazy scrap metal men dump them there son. If you want to put traps out try prettying them up. The make our coastal waters look like shit :casstet:

seesm the peelr story made the press but it\'s still saying the bye law has been abolished which it hasnt.

Marty you are missing the point, the lines of tyres are stopping the crabs going into the rocks where they are free for everybody and the trap owners? say the crabs are theres, bollocks
