Anglers safety

In case you didn't read it in the Sunday Sun, below is what was in my article

It’s time that all sea anglers realised that our sport is dangerous, the only statistics available at the moment come from 2005, and prove it. There where eight fatalities among shore anglers, there have already been four already this year between Blackhall and Arbroath, and seven among boat anglers, never mind the near misses, which we all have experienced at least once. And sadly we have had experience of fatalities already this year. Then like other dangerous sports why do we not go prepared, of course we all wear suitable waterproof clothing when out in the winter fishing for cod when one of the most powerful elements known to nature is crashing along the shore. But why is the clothing we wear nearly always dark. No wonder the coastguard after every incident involving sea angler’s states, “if they wore bright clothing we might find anyone in trouble quicker”. But is it the sea angler’s fault, go into any tackle shop and 98% of clothing is dark. I know that Sonik after the latest tragedy, who’s staff knew the last casualty well, have started looking at high visibility clothing for sea anglers. There are many other ways, along with your high visibility clothing, which you can make yourself feel a little bit secure, always take your mobile with you in a waterproof container,
Wear a slim line life belt, which will hardly restrict your casting, that inflates when immersed in water, if you are knocked out you wouldn’t be able to blow it up yourself. I used to take a pack of mini flares with me, this was mainly for when I was boat fishing, but stayed in my pocket through the winter. Carrying a good whistle with you can also help searchers to locate you, one of the best but most expensive is to get yourself a mini Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon (EPIRB) although it may cost around £200-£300, it will fit in your pocket and last for years, longer than any £200-£300 fishing rod would. You may say it will never happen to you, I hope it doesn’t, but it might and it doesn’t matter how well you know a mark, a freak wave, a fall, thick fog that completely disorientates you, a heart attack caused by excitement at catching a big fish, anything unexpected you can not discount. All the above may not save your life, or helped those who have had accidents in the past, but it just might. There is nothing worse than seeing a young family in tears at the loss of a loved one. Get yourselves seen and before you start thinking how much it would cost, what price do you put on your life, you can always make a rod last another season. Hope you let your partners, family, and friends read this, they may push you to look after yourself.

Well said Alan. Thats why i bought a floatation suit. When i first started fishing over 30 years ago there was no such thing.
Mick.

suggest you do what i did Mick, put a set of mini flares in the pocket, you could be floating around for hours before anyone finds you, the water is very cold.

Good article Alan makes us think about the dangers and our safety, i have a floatation suit but now my 11 year old son has taken up the sport and i have looked but cant find kids floatation suits or am i looking in the wrong places

very good read alan, totally good sound advice hope more people take it than leave it. hope we all enjoy a casualty free and safe year this year korky..

There is one peace of equipment that i carry when i go fishing is a strobe light attatched to my arm and it will activate when it comes in contact with the water, nice and simple and dosnt cause any restricted movement or effects anything else and can be easily seen if the unthinkable happens.

Right on all counts Alan. I usually fish alone in my boat. I have 2 vhf radios, flare pack, collar type life jackets, a life ring, anchor, gps, sounder, mobile phone, and the engine fail safe connected to myself, should I fall overboard whilst motoring.

thanks for that Tilly, one Q what happens if you get splashed by a big wave, will see if I can squeeze it in this weekend, if anybody has any safety gear they use that is not mentioned, please let me know. I am also pleased to see all are taking it serious.

I'm looking at getting one of those over-the -shoulder & round the waist type things that I've seen cyclists wearing. Only an inch or so wide and it can be slipped on over any jacket or clothing so not restricted to any one particular coat. Another thought is a pair of the high-viz armbands, for the same reasons.

Gary :)

absolutely cracking article alan, which has also prompted other people to join in with advice on what to have safety wise

I always wear self inflating life jacket when out on the boat and even on my small boat I carry Vhf handheld, gps, flares, compass, engine spares, Anchor plus 80metres of rope, mobile phone and make regular phone calls to someone back home(our lass) but will say that I'm now seriously thinking of wearing life jacket when shore fishing!!

Ps really good article Alan!

as a member of a local fishing club we have red titan tops with the logo on the back with the sponsers name, very bold but have been told it can be spotted for a mile or so.never the less there needs to be something designed to accomadte the sea angler that wades out to marks and wades back, something that can be set at a designed depth or submersion, come on titan you can design this for the shore anglers, built in to the smocks.or anyother shore angling manufacturer.surerly someone has an idea they would like to have made for the shore angler.

Well Alan at least then you know your peace of equipment works!!!

The reason i choose that was i used to fish alot on the rocks around St Marys and Cambois and if i slipped and knocked myself out and i was lying there and the tide came in then at least the strobe would come in to use where as a mobile phone/flares or whatever else would be no use at all!!

very sensible Tilly, getting knocked out should be a major factor when getting kitted out

Best bit of safety kit is the buddy system, don't fish alone.

I agree, buddy system does work, but what happens if one of you go in, would you stand and watch until the lifeboat came, or would you go in and try and get him, bet there isn't many who wouldn't try and then there could be two.
