Returned back yesterday from my annual 3 day break up the Mull, stopping in Sandhead.
The weather was pretty good apart from a horrible NW wind that blew until yesterday morning, putting all my favourite west coast Pollack marks out of bounds, and also bearing in mind that they were massive tides, this made the sea even worse.
Wednesday
Woke to find a lovely sunny day but very breezy.
All plans of Crammag Head went out the window, so it was down to Lagvag for Pollack and whatever I could get out on the big gear.
Fishing was very slow, got half a dozen Pollack to 2.5lb on the float but nothing else.
The mark I fished...
The best Pollack...
.
As I said earlier, they were massive tides and the ebb saw a tide race that was truly unbelievable. Waves were actually breaking sideways due to the speed of the water rushing out. I got a couple of vids of it (hope this works)

Thursday
I didn't fancy another day at the mull so I thought I'd continue my 5 year quest to get my first scottish Bass on the plug. I basically just donned my chesties, grabbed a rod and plugs and walked to different spots, having a cast here and there. Things looked bleak when a bloody big seal broke surface about 20 yards away, and as I was cursing it, all hell broke loose as something grabbed my plug 10 feet away from me. After a short battle and lots of praying for it not to drop off, I beached this beauty....
My first Scottish Bass. I was shaking like a kid over it
. After a couple of pics, I gently got it back into the water and watched it glide back into the weed beds. Fantastic. I fished for a short while longer, getting one more schoolie...
The fish disappeared at high water, so a well chuffed angler got himself back to the digs for a celebratory pint. I had a short session later on at dusk at another mark, but with no success.
Friday
Woke to find no let up in the wind, so after my success with the plugs the day before, I decided to try the same marks on for the last couple of hours of the flood. It was a gorgeous day though, and the mark I fished gave me some shelter out of the breeze so that I could fish in my chesties and a t-shirt. Action started more or less from the off and I soon had my first Bass out
Quickly followed by another...
I added another couple of schoolies before high water came and with it, weed. I'm now officially hooked on catching Bass on the plug, its mesmerising fishing.
In the evening, I met my mate Kev who lives up there, and we planned on a run out in his boat the next morning as the wind was forecast to drop, planned with numerous pints of Tennants....
Saturday
Kev woke me at 7 and I was rough as ****. We got our gear together and headed for Port Logan. A flat see greeted us, with just a lazy swell coming into the bay. I was managing to keep the previous nights drink down, but it was a battle. The plan was to feather for launce and mackerel and hit some Pollack marks south of Crammag, where we'd both been smashed last year. As we passed Laggantalloch and Crammag, the sea was starting to get worse with the increasing tide - how long could I stop from crying for hughie.....
The launce didn't want to play, and we only got 3 mackerel out. The fish finder was showing plenty of fish, so we set about after the Pollack. After a couple of hours, stopping in a few places, our tally was.....0! We just couldn't get a touch. We then headed to the north end of Logan bay to a mark that always produces smaller pollack, but still nothing....and then I decided it was time for some groundbaiting, so out came the previous nights tennants
. With that, we headed back in, so a disappointing end to a great break.
The Bass made the trip worthwhile, and it was funny that my first was the biggest I got, but I'm really hooked on it now. I returned everyone, and I got just a good a kick watching them shoot off back into the weed beds as I did catching them. I can't wait to get back up there to have another go.
