Northumberland, Howick area, Sugar sands, 1st choice location from last night.
Had 3 fish, 6.2 lbs, 5. lbs, 4.10 lbs.
1st fish was a double header [4.10 lbs] x [1.5, lb] small 1 on the top pennel hook, big 1 on the bottom, ( first for me ) just felt the pull/bite...then slack-line 1.5 hrs before high, returned the little un.
Got the 2nd fish toward high water, [4.10 lbs] cast out. I then noticed that as i was casting to the right, i was drifting to left, so i was following it over as the wind was gusting right to left, this is where the fish had taken my bait, i also noticed a patch of black water, no breakers until the shoreline a big hole where food would be.
I decided to move over to the far left side, as the wind was getting up & I could tuck under the cliff face as the wind was blowing me & the rod, making it hard to feel the difference between a pull/bite, wind or surf.
Reeled in, grabbed the rod rest & walked to the left and cast out the used bait and put the rod in the rest, returned with my gear and started to bait another trace.... looked up at the rod tip, bang, bang.... then slack-line.... reeled in the slack felt the weight and started to bring it in, it was then i noticed my line (not more than 20/30 yards) out moving to the left toward the skeer and boulders, so i moved to the right to pull the fish away....
then it all locked up, No!
Moved to the right & into the surf, reeled again and lucky enough it released...
got the fish to the shore-line and just as it beached the hook came out, that fish made me work for her, being buffeted by the wind & waves.... [6.2 lbs] about high water...needed a tab/drink of water and to catch my breath after that...
Had a couple of casts for 40 mins or so, but the hole drained out rapidly so called it a night. Stuffed the fish in a bin liner and managed to squeeze it in my tackle box. Long walk back to the car in to the wind, but a good spring in my step.
....
Bait: Lug/rag/frozen blacks/razor/bluey & mussel.
