Another peeler thread

Need some help from lads that might be in the know, might be a long one...

This will be my first full summer fishing and I am keen to learn about and collect my own bait. Have spoken to a couple of lads from off here about collecting and read this and that on this forum and others. Here is the story so far and any advice would be greatly appreciated:

So I headed out Saturday morning for my first crab hunt, lovely sunny day for it. Still wasn't, and apparently still not, sure what I was doing. So I am on the banks of the Tweed estuary rooting around, lifting the weed, turning over rocks and trying to think like a crab. Not having any success (only at it for 15min or so) and then I find 2 old tyres, not traps I don't think if they were that was a long time ago. No mud in the middle of them, just around the inside rim of the tyre itself, so pulled the tyre out the ground and emptied all the mud out. In the mud I found 7 crabs, 3 or 4 of which were decent size and very docile. They were all totally covered in black mud so couldn't really check them out but was hopeful.

Brought them home, washed them off and checked them out. None of them were peelers but as said some very docile. Put the docile ones in a washing up bowl with some water and covered in wet sea weed, put the others in water in another container (water taken from tweed at low tide) and put them in the garage. Checked them last night and wet sea weed again and added more water, just a bit, to washing up bowl. I am tending to these things like pets by the way :D

Gets up this morning and me and the little one head out out the garage to check on them. Now some how all the ones that were docile and i had hoped were going to peel soon had got out of the bloody washing up bowl, luckily I had put both containers in a kayak (think red Indian type) I have in the garage. The bowl they were in is a good 5 inches deep! How the hell did they manage that?!? Team work or something! So I put them back in with fresh water and sea weed re-soaked. They remained in there all day but are quite active now. They are currently all in a bucket full of water taken from the tweed about 15 min ago (on the flood)

Where did I go wrong?

Do crabs that are not trying or anywhere near ready to peel hide in the mud at low tide? Could it be that all of these had recently peeled? (they were and are hard, surely i couldn't be that unlucky) Could the fact the water i had them in was taken at low tide so very little salt content? Why have they seemingly become more active?

I thought I was making baby steps forward with bait collecting but now I am puzzled. It is a learning curve. Any ideas?

I plan on giving them a good drink now, putting them back in as they were and see how it goes.

1st you need not take them home to check if they are peelers just get hold of the end of the back leg and gently pull if its a peeler it will come off like takeing a shoe off you will see the soft part underneath you might not find any peelers as it might still be too cold for them to peel also fresh water puts them back peeling so if it rains this can have a knock on effect also you need not go out during the day peelers can be found at night the same way also try walking along the edge of the water at night with a good torch shining into the waters edge you can pick up crabs that are carrying normally a cock crab nearly always a dogger with a peeler or soft crab underneath what you can do if you find some pellers take them home and keep them in a little water with sea weed until the back starts to pop off this makes easier peeling ---PS Is there still worm to be dug on the small north beech? pm with answer please

Most of these crabs were black with the mud they were in so couldn't really see what colour they were. I only walked about 200 yards to get them so not far to go to put them back if I have made a mistake with them.

I am not sure if it is too early for peelers. It is early but I am sure there are a few about. They are all cocks the crabs I got, from my understanding it is only cocks peeling just now with the hens peeling later. No need for pm mate, it isn't a secret. The beech used to be good for worm but like most places that used to be it is no more as it has been hammered. Don't get me wrong you will still get some but not enough to make it worth your while travelling

Think I will give them a couple of days and see what happens. If it is salty water they need I will walk round to the beech and get a bucket full

Thanks mate i no the beech used to be very good i used to travel up and could get enough worm for a week or two's worth of fishing you could also stock up on blacks during the summer ready for the winter good old days

Id say it was still abit cold for them to peel in great numbers like might get the odd one but not many, just keep doing wat you are doing mate checking your coast line out and im sure youll hit on to a few crab wen the times right theres tones of the feckers all over wen the conditions are suitable. Happy crabing lol : )

JOHN imo, give it another 2 month,to early atm up your area.you could use them 100% doggers for wrasse fishing around say eyemouth,st,abbs area.anyway as ive said in earlier thread we have a touring caravan in your area.so if you want ill try @ put you on peeler crab situation when we are up there,ps will be up there next week.

like has been said above m8 check 4 peelers on the shore & if not showing signs of peeling just let them go. if a crab is not showing signs of peeling & u take them they r very hard 2 bring on & will die because a crab that is'nt peeling still has 2 eat & a vew lads i know have brought crabs on but in a heated tank with air stones.
like said give a few months & u will find as many as u need. i had a caravan on the berwick site 4 years & used 2 get all my peelers from the little bay @ the bottom of the cliff steps, i could fill a bucket by just going down on the big spring tides & dropping down off the ledges & just looking along the underhangs & the big cock crabs would just b wedged with the peeling hens underneath, end june through july.

Anyway me & my daughter spent over an hour & must have checked not far short of 100 crabs & not 1 of them were peeling or even starting to peel this could all change though in a few weeks once the sea temperatures rise a few degrees
