Anyone use sakuma hooks?

there are rumours all over the net that both sakuma and varivas hooks specifically big mouths and mantas come off the same production line. i have also seen this on other forums aswel.

apperntly varivas are re-branded for exclusive uk for sale by veals mail order

put these hooks side by side and they are identical in every single way.

Except the price!!

I sharpen 3/0 or 4/0 sakuma's occasionally as long as you have a decent stone and put a cutting point on then you can get them reasonably sharp.

reason for me asking quite a few years back while on holiday in great yarmouth i called into dave dowcras shop he was making rigs up and was cursing carbon hooks as he was saying you cant sharpen the bloody things.but imo they are not cheap and i would use more than once if able to keep point sharp but how sharp is sharp.

or to be honest has a hook got to be razor sharp as after first cast and on the retrieve the point must get dulled very quick one would thing when reeling in over whatever ground is out there.

Getting a bait in the water is often more important than having the V sharpest hook. Changing a rig or hook can waste minutes. As long as the hook is sharp enough then it can mean the difference between fish or no fish in a match!

There are times when fishing heavy ground you can run out of "the" rig or you lose a rig when double patting and are forced to hunt about, it's on these occasions when the stone will come out!

sure i seen summit on the yorkshire forums a while back about sharpening chemically sharpened hooks.

think a diamond hone is the best option apparently.

interesting and am going to have a shot next season

out to save money these days:)

ive never fished a lot for the last 4/5 years but I used to swear by sakuma mantra extra they got me a bass of a lifetime into the shore and I loved them ever since .the bass was 9lb took runnydown and rag on a 2/0 manta extra p/pully rig . I always used Vikings before that but there thick gauge hooks ill have to have a bit google into whats best for winter shore work now id still go for the sakuma range atm tho :)
