I agree with part of what you say - but disagree with other bits....
When I did the piece for the Shields Gazette, I was at pains to point out that the litter on the pier was not all fishing related.....and..... true to her word, the reporter made that pretty clear in her story. She was very much on the "anglers side".
However, I've go to say that a HUGE amount of the mess (particularly that up by the lighthouse) IS fishing related......and down to nobody else but "anglers".......as is the stench of piss up there aswell.
Why would the Council be to blame for not keeping the pier clean??
It belongs to the Port of Tyne Authority - not the Council.
Even so, although they own it - the "responsiblity" for keeping the pier clean and free from left over bait, fish guts, fish, discarded hooks & line, empty daylite packets, piss and whatever else, doesn't really rest with the PTA, either.......those who use the pier are responsible for how they leave it............don't you think?
