Autumn at St Abbs (Warning a head for heights required)

Hi lads, the best sea fishing is just about over now up in the scottish borders but with a bit of luck and a settled sea, there could still be fish to be found for at least another month or so.

I took a trip up on sunday and although fishing wasn't a patch on how it usually is at the height of summer I still caught a couple of pollack around the 4lb mark, lots of mackeral, a small wrasse and coaly.

Pollack fishing is great fun but you do have to put a lot of time and effort into catching them, they're just not as prolific over here as on the west coast. When these fish hit though they don't half go and anything over 4lb takes some stopping!

One of two similiar pollack caught on this trip. 4 inch sidewinder lures with orange tails are deadly and are my pick of the bunch.

Still mackeral to be had and in numbers to! Not many coalfish about though or cod.

You need a head for heights for all of the marks along this stretch of coast. It's worth the effort and bum nipping though as the place is spectacular and during august especially the fishing can be great!

The best time to catch pollack is at first light or during a dull cloudy day on lures. Cod and wrasse fishing is best when the sea is flat calm on a glorious sunny day, the kind of day I like best. Peeler crab, ragworm and prawn all work.

No need to cast far either as fish are often found under your rod tip.

The "path" down. A goat track really.

Nearly there.

I only fish here with easily carried bass rods and a very light bag with only the essentials, a selection of floats, lures and 1 to 3 ounce weights. Why use and loose 6 ounce weights when smaller weights are cheaper and easier to carry. I don't take a tripod and prop my rods up on the rocks. Reels are filled with at least 40lb braid or mono.

Weekends often get busy with neoprene nuisances so it's best to try fishing from monday to friday. Although I tried to wave them away this time these numpty dumpties decided to explore the waters within feet of where I was fishing!

More fish frighteners turned up to, not good at all. They show no respect to anglers......£22 in petrol, another £15 on bait and lures, I can tell you I wasn't a happy bunny at all. @$$£$

Anyway the odd fish appeared again about an hour after they ran out of gas.

The lighthouse nearly 300ft above the sea. It's a long way down to all marks.

Can you tell which rock is the crocs back? A hint can you make out the crocodile to the right of the pic?

I'm looking for a fishing buddy or two to keep me company on 5 or 6 trips up to eyemouth and st abbs during next summer, hence the pics as you'll need to know what your getting yourself into, lol. I'll pick you up in my motor from the Tyneside area and take you for free as long as you can provide the fresh peeler crab. (My dodgy knees can't take any more crabbing) Sounds like a deal to me!

You also need to either have a very good head for heights or be familiar with the area. One more thing you will scratch your rods to bits so if your a tackle tart and hate scratches this isn't the place for you, oh! and you need to be fit to, lol.

Just pm me and join me on a few st abbs adventures next year. Tightlines, Dave.

Sheep or anglers I'm not too sure who's down there most. I've also noticed that the pot men are going daft lately you sometimes can't put a line out for ropes. I thought they respected the voluntary marine zone or was that idea abandoned by all ages ago?

Nice sesh mate. Great place to be and fish. Me and peeagee fished just down from the caraven park at eyemouth on saturday, that climb nearlly killed us never mind the croc. Guy spinning next to us was pulling up full houses and all sorts. Plenty of coalies on frozen crab but that was it apart from peeagee getting a one on a float fished limpet.

Nice pics Dave. Brings it all back including the wobbly legs. :) I will be back there next year not too sure about the peeler though.

Great pic's!

Great pic's!

I enjoyed that thread! I have missed the whole Summer. I have been out of the country. I know that it is approaching the end of the Summer season up North but I am intending on getting a session on Wednesday and Thursday in Eyemouth.
I'm hoping to still see the Cod and Pollack.
I have noticed that there are only a few threads regarding the summer fishing up North.
The weather is favourable and thtides are bi so I am looking forward to it!
I'll let you know how I get on.

All the best, Wayne.

Good luck Wayne, I could well be up there again at some point this weekend if the weather holds....looks good though. Let us know how you get on for sure.

Nice pics Dave. My knees would explode walking up and down there. Much easier today in Douggies boat at Craster. We were only 100 feet off the point were the rocks end near the castle. Never fished that close in before.
Ps Dave did you go for the Kayak------i,m sure you mentioned you were thinking about this angle of fishing.
Mick.

Well lads I've had at least ten replies from people up for it so looks like my days fishing up there on my own are well and truly over! I look forward to meeting you all that's what this type of fishing forum is great for meeting new angling buddies.

Mick I'd love to get a kayak and was on the point of splashing my cash on the whole kit and caboodle when my kayak buddy pulled out of the idea as he just had too much on his plate.

I may be slightly crazy (just look at those cliffs) but I'm not daft enough to go out in a kayak on my lonesome. Anyway I upgraded all my fishing gear with the dosh saved and went charter boat fishing instead. I'm really glad it turned out that way as I've had my best boat season ever and I'm now hooked and booked for next years season.

this is exactly what we are after, i couldnt have asked for any more sound advice, 3 of us heading up 1st thing Sunday morning and that info is priceless. got a whole range of bait, peeler rag lug mack squid. just hope the weather holds off. forecast light rain but it changes evrey hr or so. im hoping come sunday night to have a catch report just like this one or even better lol.

i fished both the st abbs marks on thurs/fri with loads of coley showing up to frozen crab on thursday nothing on the spinners then on friday we moved on to crocodiles had been fishing for about 2hrs when a boat came into the cove and dropped two divers in water then back out didnt stop me fishing as my view is they knew we were fishing and still went in so if they get tangled or hooked its there lookout their gear costs more than mine :D anyway i got my pb wrasse  it was only three pound but the biggest ive had in 3yrs targeting them iam still feeling it in my legs now
