I\'ve just been down to check on the boat and there is mussel everywhere. It\'s just took half an hour to clean them up. There all over the pontoons aswell.

If the fish arn\'t feeding on them the seagulls are.

hi tala, yes i,ve heard of clammydos or whatever you call then dont know whats happening to my spelling recently cant rel properly now, back to clammydo,s i used to fish the scottish sea lochs loch long etc late 70s we used to get them up there they are a very big mussle or muccell??????????? been told they are also offshore about 3 to 4 miles off seaham got no idea where you can buy them regards john

just bought a pound of these ,what a fanny on,insert knife twist and scrape out ,isnt there an easy way ?buggers kept wanting to close back up ,seems an awfull lot of work for little return size wise :casstet:

Good to see another of the regular names back again

nice to be back Tony cheers

Lol Bri...
Aye there is a bit of a knack to it.

When I first started shelling my own, it took me ages and the end results were pretty poor......may of them unrecognisable as mussels at all.......and very sore fingers...lol.

Practice m8, that\'s all it takes.....I can now shell a 2lb bag in about 20 mins and the results are far better ......ie WHOLE mussels

never mind practice lol
just type a brief set of instructions ,diagrams would be nice as well :P

is it not possible to buy em shelled ?

shelling mussels is a bit of a fart on but well worth the effort.yes there is a bit of a knack to it but the result is a nice fresh orange piece of meat that fish cant resist.ive fished with both fresh and frozen and fresh knocks spots off the frozen.and also ive witnessed a 9lb cod caught on rancid stinking not even worthy putting on a hook mussel so you never can tell with this bait.

collect yer own!

if you get down to the black middens on a very low tide you can get to the big uns, bigger than you\'ll see in the shops. Nobody collects them down there, which is not to suprising, don\'t think I\'d want to eat them.

good crabbing spot while your there

not sure about clammydos, not heard them but they might
be the same as piddocks
http://www.geocities.com/slongrigg/pholas.html

they can be 6\" long and the mollusc in side is fairly tough, so good for the hook.

there\'s
loads on the west coast of scotland, commoner than mussels in places, but I have found them at low tide on druridge bay

bizzarre thing about the piddock is the they are bioluminescent - there\'s a part of the mollusc that glows in the dark!

Tracey pointed these out me years ago - shes an avid shell collector. They seem to work well in cocktails with other baits, and because they are so big, just one can be enough on a hook

tala
Clamydos (what ever) you can buy from spotty dog tackle in stockton. You get about 5 in a pot for a couple of quid. Great for bait by themselves as you get a big bait with each clammy(they are about 3 times the size of a big normal mussel).

Always used to end up with a bag of mussel when we used to go bait digging with the family when I was a kid.

As you say Tony there\'s a knack to getting them out.

Also a very underrated bait as well.

We had a set of old bluntish plain blade knives (i.e. no serrations on them) that we used to used for getting in to them.

On the subject of shellfish....has anyone ever used cockles for bait???

Just found this while searching for Clammy doo\'s or whatever there called.

The large specimen is the Horse Mussel or Clabachdubh (Black Mussel), Modiolus modiolus, at 142 mm long.

....has anyone ever used cockles for bait???

aye. Again highly under rated. they are a lot tougher than mussels, but you need \'kin hundreds of em as they are only small

I suppose if we were all daft and rich we could give scallops a try.

might be worth finding a fishmonger and asking him to keep any scallops that are past ther best rather than hoy em oot

with no lug left last year in scotland, I even tried limpets, which worked well float fishing for little pollack. Trying to get em out of the shells, after you had suprised em off the rrock was tricky so I took to just mashing the shell in situ with a rock and hooking the remains!

Cheers for the info on clammydo\'s lads.
As for mussel, I always leave them outside for a day or two and a lot of them open up (easier to get flesh out), if you are going to freeze them anyway, why not freeze them in thier shells and when you want to use them (after slightly defrosting) you can easily scape the flesh out with a spoon.

There is also a guy on stockton market who sells large frozen (in shell) newzealand salt water mussels 1kg for 6quid. These are great baits as twice the size of normal mussels.

i was talking to some one the other day about the greenlip mussels from new zealand

they are cooked

as you cant export live (things)or somthing

i will have a word tomorrow
unless the person looks in and clarifies what ive said
