yes you can mate, all big supermarkets sell mackerel, tesco, asda, morrisons etc

I normally buy it at asda or morrisons or tesco and get them to fillet it as well so its just ready to cut into strips when fishing it saves me clarting on with it lol:)
They often do the nets of fresh mussels as well

yeah but dont go on sunday as they close the fish counters only the meat counters are open and acctually it has been said the best bait so far has been raw chicken but if fish counter is closed the there will be a small frezzer somewhere that will do frozen musscle and king prawns smashing thats what i done didnt know the fish counter was closed and went in S**T!!! closed looked round just about to leave and boom found a small frezer with musscle and pranws what would cost about £50 in tackel shop only cost £7 in tesco so was chuffed and that day caught 2 crabs 3 flatties and a couple of coalies all undersize though and all returned safely chucked in lol :D:D

Tesco

Tesco

Always make a point of looking at the fish counter at Tesco (Kingston Park) and the word fresh dosen't spring to mind when looking at the fish. I haven't found Morrisons (Cowgate) any better. Have been to both, as staff were wheeling out the trolley with boxes of fish once unpacked it still didn't look Fresh.
Yes supermarkets maybe good for certain items to be used for bait but if your after fresh fish, try elswhere?

go to any of these supermarkets a hour before closing for some nice deals on fish. I got 3 macky for under 40p once in morrisons lol, was chuffed :D

If you buy macky from the supermarkets, have a look in the fridges for fillets.
These are taken from the fish as soon as they recieve them.
They are a lot better than the whole fish with there guts in that are on show. These deteriorate very quickly and the flesh has gone to mush.

bought some [fresh mackerel] from morrisons to try a bit of float fishing with the mack's belly ,it was just turning to mush as i tried to put it on the hook ,even bait elastic couldn't hold it on.

the best thing to do is next time your in the tackle shop just buy afew packs of frozen then you know you will have bait. its usally cheaper in the tackle shops for mackerel than supermarkets. Or you can take afew home you catch in a freezer bag and freeze them and then you know there good quality.

yeah supermarket makky is not so good best getting some frozen from your local tackle shop.

i wouldnt buy (fresh fish) if thats what you like to call it from a supermarket many of times iv had an argument at the fish counter with the staff that work behind it as soon as you take a look at them you can tell straight away that they aint fresh

Bait

Bait

Did hear this on one boat trip that if you wanted your Mackerel to be in tip top condition it had to be vacum packed and blast frozen a.s.a.p. keeps for a good while and when you open the packet fresh (ish) Mackerel.

NOW DID THE 5/6 MACKERELS TOTAL WEIGH 2lb - 5lb OR DID EACH INDIVIDUAL FISH WEIGH 2lb - 5lb.
A 5lb MACKEREL IS SOME FISH.SOME MAY SAY A FISH OF A LIFE TIME

try joes fish net in byker its behind the old post office on the corner of heaton rd and shields rd i think its denmark street
