Bass on a 6ft Spinning Rod Fun but any better suggestions?

wheres the fish?

Well-known member
Hello Everyone :D, My name is dean :O Really? Yes it is lol. Anyways last year i had loads of fun with my challenge, I used a 6ft spinning rod to catch as many species of fish as i could. I ended up with 9 species of fish, with a few cracking bass, a mullet (I posted it on forum), a 4lb Pollack << Dont ask, this was the hardest fish to land the ammount of times it ran for the kelp and i was helpless pfft i was amazed i landed it :), wrasse, plaice etc.

But this year My challenge is to catch a Bass yes a bass on a plug, Last year i had 13 misses. One of the most fustrating things when you see a bass fly 5ft out of the water behind your plug and you start winding slowly thinking come on take it you know you want to and it never comes back. Its embarrased its mates are going HAHAHA you missed :) Anyways, Im looking for a nice plugging rod, anyone got any nice suggestions based on experience?

Btw, If anyone wants to share with me some tips for the north east it would be greatly apreciated. (PM me) I am purley a sport fisherman. Every fish and i mean every fish i catch gets safley returned to the sea. I dont use daylights for makky i use a single hook or fly v.light line and a small reel and whippy rod. I like the feeling of releasing fish unharmed to fight another day, really its just the way i am. And i know you guys are protective over your marks, you have worked long and hard to find these marks and put the time and effort into finding them. But a lil help from you guys would be greatly apreciated.

Anyways, Any bass fisherman might wonna check this out Bass Anglers' Sportfishing Society, Well worth the membership. Dedicated to bass and preserving stocks. :)

Cheers lads Dean :)

Bushwacker XLNT 10-40g 8ft

Light, quick, very responsive and only 60 quid!!

The hardest part of taking bass on lures is finding a mark in the first place. You've had numerous misses on lures so you've already got the mark. If a bass slashes and misses your lure try leaving the lure stationary for a few seconds, this will sometimes induce a second take.

For lure fishing look at rocky areas around headlands. Look for deep kelp filled gullies and holes and plenty of tidal flow. Best times are dusk and dawn, try to fish areas away from joe public as these areas are rarely productive. Although bass in our region are taken on lures, you wont find it prolific fishing. I only had 6 on lures last year and a lot more blanks than that - but this is what makes it so rewarding when you do get one!!

Slowing down the retrieve to induce a second take????

Imagine a Bass chasing a small fish and biting at it; but luckily for the small fish, the Bass misses. What do you suppose the small fish will do? Stay still? Swim slower? No; it will try to escape as fast as it can. If you have a take on your plug that misses, reel faster to simulate an escaping fish; you'll get more second takes as it looks far more natural. It works!
The same principle applies to fly fishing with lures too.

He said stop to induce a second take not slow down. This is because a bass will hit a target with it's gill plates to stun it before going back to swallow it. So if you get a hit and then it's gone. Stop for three or four seconds before retrieving at the same speed you were before the hit.

I've had it happen exactly like that a few times so it definitely works.

Broony; I think if you read the original post again you'll see that he did say "winding slowly".

"But this year My challenge is to catch a Bass yes a bass on a plug, Last year i had 13 misses. I appreciate that you've caught fish on your method; but I've personally had more fish come back for a second take using my method than slowing down or stopping.

I thought you were referring to Sean's post as you almost directly quoted him but it seems a you might not of been. Regardless, whatever works for you. Just thought I would explain the theory behind stopping.

Broony; nee bother mate; just some crossed wires there. Point taken on the "stopping" method.
It's exactly as you say though; "whatever works for you" is the best method.

The original poster has had no luck with his method and so can't do any worse if he tries someone else's method.

It might be interesting if he was to try both of our methods over the next year and report back with his results.
If he still blanks then I would have to think that he's tying the plugs on upside down, Lol.

No offence where's the fish

try sites like "mr.fish jersey" and "the art of fishing", the have a good selection of rods in all ranges and prices.

Like Sean says, the bushwacker xlnt is a popular choice. I think mr.fish has a rod sale on now, some quantum rods have been more than halved in price.

Generally 6ft is very short for plugging, try 7 to 8' 6" rated 10 to 30g.

Spot on Broony bud, more often than not the fish hit the lure to stun the prey before coming back. A couple of the bass I had last season actually hit the lure before I started the retrieve.

im using a teklon concept 832 paired with a tiny 2500 reel. super light weight setup so you can plug all day without your wrist taking a lot of punishment.

my bro is using a teklon 802, slightly better for soft plastics over the 832.

having used both theres no major difference, 802 has a slightly more sentitive tip, you can feel the plug working a little better.

going into the higher end of the market, my mate has a tenryu red dragon express. he swears by it. it looks good, build quality is fantastic. spending £400+ quids on 1 wont land you more fish tho.

at around £130 either of the teklons will do you just fine and you'll be very happy with the purchase.

for £60 the bushwacker is a great rod, i wouldnt bother myself tho. my bros snapped 2.

both snapped same place.
