If we have big bass from our shoreline ( which we do ) , why is none caught from the wrecks like down south . I have never heard of one from the wrecks , anyone else ???
 
I\'ve never seen one Dave, would like to though! :D

We also don\'t see many haddock, I caught one earlier in the year off the hard ground at Marsden, first I\'ve ever seen.
 
Hi Lads,

Volante has seen no Bass on wrecks either.We have picked up a couple of Haddock though Keith....probably by pure chance and it\'s not something we come across often.

We had a lot of haddock this year , not big though . All came of soft bottom at various distances . If there was any bass on the wrecks , someone would have pulled one by now with all the shads and stuff . odd that ?
 
could it possibly be to do with water temprature, not to sure if there is much difference between north and south, but maybe only slight differences prevent bass from going to various marks or wrecks etc....

just a thought

also when i fish down the thames estuary at least 5-6 times a year the bass that are caught large or small are usually caught in marks that feature on the sounder as sand bars etc not so much wrecks...

We all had this convo last year lol. Has anyone gone out to specifically target Bass yet? You never know it might make a difference.

20 years ago souter point area was a big haddack area its been fishes out ,lets hope there returning
 
Since last years convo on bass , I have not targeted them but the boat tactics have changed with all manner of shads , twin-tails etc used and all proven bass catchers . You would of thought with all the varied methods at least one would have popped up . Take your point about the sandbanks John , and we are working on it ;)
 
also found that the types of bait used makes a massive difference have tried live peeler crab and they would not touch it where as you stick a whole squid or large sandeel on and you stand a good chance, the best killer bait i used was live hermit crab

How the hell & were the hell do you get live hermit crab from, Ihave tried picking winkles when the fishing is quiet,& have come accross a few, tried smashing their shells with a stone,to get them out but without much luck, Cheers for any info + are they good for any other fish, I take it you just hook them up best you can Cheers Tich :D
 
what we do is put a drop net down out the back of the boat with a couple of mackeral / cods heads etc in and then just check it every 15 mins put them in the live bucket and hang them over the side of the boat. they will stay there quite happily until next time you want fresh bait.
Now this was done in the thames estuary would be intresting to see what you would pull up from our waters.
As for other species we have caught smoothound on them and thornback ray.....

also was over on the west coast for a week fishing in october was a lad digging for bait and he was also getting large hermit in the muscle beds he was digging in..

ps jeff said he had been around yours to put some calamine lotion on your scabs ,i thought that was a bit personell

Have you lads ever been shore fishing and been told your casting too far???
I think if you give up on trying to get them off shore and look inshore....all my bass have come from within 10ft of water...caught on sandy and also shingle type ground. best time to get them is early morning or late evening....oh and i\'ve even managed to get them to 9lb 3oz here in SCOTLAND!
bait wise..crab,lug (not both at the same time!) or red-gills on spinning rods......might help to open your eyes a bit!....

That was not the original question m8 . What i said was if we catch them from the shore ( Which we do but don\'t broadcast it for obvious reasons ! ) why is there none pulled from the wrecks like from the southern waters .One of lifes little mystery\'s me thinks .
 
There has to be somewhere off the coast locally where big bass hang out, whether wreck or reef, chances are it must be a reef otherwise the odd one would have been caught by accident. Although it could well be that if they are on a wreck they will be well above it and anglers tend to get their bait down to the wreck as sson as possible. On one occassion i was fishing a wreck with a shaol of fish well above it, thinking they where just mackies or coalies I never bothered having a go until late on. I did have a couple of good takes and fish on for a litle while, but never landed one to see what they where. They could well have been cod feeding high or Pollock or big coalies one never knows. Bass well into double figures do turn up in nets on occassion, a couple of years ago two around 18lb where caught, so they are there somewhere, like anything else the effort or shear luck will find them. Somebody may already know and be keeping it quiet, like marks that fish for other species are.?????? :casstet:
