How is the sea looking lads? Will the beaches be fishable? Whitburn or Seaham?

Heading down to look at Whitley now and will report back. Seas looking huge on the webcams but it can be hard to tell on them

Just been up marsden and the seas not that big rollers are breaking about 100yrds out am gan to pier now for a few chucks

I was thinking on going out but the tides are pants. Why does the sea not come away when there is a decent size tide.

Lynemouth very big at half tide - only saw one light near the pipe. I had a look along at the Beacons and it was too rough for me.

Hi David,

In order to provoke debate can I suggest that the combination of a big sea and a small tide is better than either a big sea and a big tide or a small sea and a small tide, especially on the sands.

Please go into detail my good man! I was always of the belief that big tides are better, however i believe that different marks fish on different size tides anyway and some are unfishable on a sea running and poor tide.

Hi Jamie,

My thoughts are that most holes on most of our beaches drain out on big tides and, as most are relatively flat, big seas mean that the runs associated with them make them difficult to fish early on the ebb and you get washed out early on the flood. Obviously there are marks on every beach that prove me wrong (Bathing Pool Corner at Tynemouth being one), but, as a general rule I think it works. On smaller tides access to the holes lasts longer, there's more water to fish into and you can fish for longer. Some places, like Seaton Sluice, don't fit the model at all as a bigger tide might allow access to the next sand bar.

Big tides and big seas do allow access to many marks up the skeers, which, imho, is often the difference between the catch rates for our top anglers and we lesser mortals.

That pretty much echoes what i have found on certain marks around Whitburn, big tides just empty out too quickly and theres a lack of time when the bigger tide races in. Some fish on a lazy roll when the water depth is better on a poor tide but is too shallow on a bigger tide and similar sea state.

Fished Whitburn a couple of years ago and experienced exactly what you said, got on the mark, cast out, found out I'd no water left half an hour later. No problem if you know what to do next but if you're new to a mark it could mean a long night. Small tides are much more forgiving.

I have experienced the same up at Howick, spend all night chasing up and down slippery skeers looking for some water on a big tide. Whereas on a smaller tide you can get a good hour in a likely looking spot.

A lot of marks I fish tend to be deeper water and usually don't have a problem of holes emptying out. As for the kelp beds. If there's enough water to cover a coda back I'll drop a bait into it.
