hi lads,was a member of the holmside fishing club in dunston many years ago,an older guy named louie used to backcast with an old rod and seriously strong lines withe a massive centre pin reel using huge mussel and lug baits into the kelp,he used to win most of our competitions and never used to lose much gear,is there a modern equivalent on the market rod and reel,i think sometimes people overcast sureley it is where the fish are not how far you can cast:)
 
I think you're talking about the old Scarborough gear mate - something like this?...

I still use mine now & again (although it hasn't been out much lately since the old tip ring broke, but thanks to Ronnie at I.D. finding me a new one it's good to go again!) I last had it out up at Beadnell last summer...

alongside the modern gear. I know David Storey (Stores on here, author of "The Codling Crouch - well worth getting!) still uses his; and for those who think they're only good for plopping in gullies, I went for a few chucks a couple of weeks back with Frankie Oldham, another old hand, and watched him bang out a lead nearly 150 yards with my old rod & reel - not bad with 60lb line straight through!! (and further than I've seen many lads able to chuck with a multiplier lol!) I certainly plan on using it a lot more now that it's all fixed up (mostly just for pleasure) as I really enjoy going "old skool" now & again...Not for the faint-hearted though; the rod & reel weigh probably three times as much as a modern outfit, but they really are awesome in the heavy stuff, and to haul fish up a height you just put the rod down with the tip sticking out over the rocks, stand on the butt and haul the line through the rings - I've seen lads pull up a double shot of 5 & 6 pounders that way!

I've literally just been chatting to another forum member and we discussed the old Alvey sidecast reels, which we had both used and both still had a lot of time for, especially for rough ground work.

I have 60lb mono on my sidecast and he uses braid on his.

Great for hand balling big fish up a cliff or through the kelp.

Modern gear is all well and good but some of the old stuff still has its place - a sidecast reel can throw a bait for miles, but the retrieve becomes a pain...

I know quite a few boat anglers also use them.

My granddad used his when he used to take me out rock fishing and its sole purpose was throwing massive baits on heavy gear into kelp and hauling big fish back through it.

hi lads,just as an aside,used to get my bait from i d fishing on chillingham road 20 years ago every friday,i understand he has expanded since,i used to travel from gateshead on the metro and change just to get his bait,the tackle shops in south sheilds seemed to be a bit of a con:mad:has anyone got his website address for the scarboros,the weight of the rod and the reel is not a problem as i am a seventeen stone idiot who likes to go back to the past

hello lads,used to fish this mark while camping in a tent just opposite the main gulleys,happy days,blood loops and paternosterseither a fish or lost gear,anyone interested ind fishing south east scotland or northumberland in late may with knowledge not hi tech fandango give me a shout,there may be an article in it
 
I'm afraid you won't find any scarboro gear in the shops any more - well, maybe an old second-hand shop, but they stopped making the rods & reels back in the early 80's as far as I can remember. A few of the old hands still have them lurking around in their sheds & garages, gathering dust & rust and occasionally they crop up on e-bay.

I don't think I.D. have a website anymore (could be wrong?) but the shop is now in Byker - sorry, but I can't for the life of me remember the address; hopefully someone can help out!

I normally have a first look up Beadnell way late May, if the conditions are good, so can let you know if you fancy a trip.

It's postal address may be Brinckburn street but if you park there yel just have to walk around the corner to Bolam Way as that's where the entrance is.:D It's even got dedicated parking bays there.

stores,have just you some stuff ,have looked all over the place for a scarboro any ideas,louie used to fish from the annalls of my mind a pettike morten fishing rod,i used to watch him chucking 12 oz on this gear,as our lass says just because its old dont discount its quality

If you want one to use from the shore, just make sure you don't get one of the wooden ones. You want one made from Tufnol (think that's what it's called), a laminate something like Formica - wooden ones are far to heavy to chuck very far.

I have a couple of early 1960's Alvey reels which I may be pursuaded to part with if the price is right.

1 is a 450/C1 which I have been told is a very rare reel. the other is a 650/C1. Both reels have the drag wheel system on them.

ID fishing has a scarborough reel on the shelf along with all the other reels they sell im sure its about £65 (i think not too sure)
