Billy the turbot is actually Gary and is a fellow Geordie. He also crews the "Famous" cat charters out of Hartlepool. He has fished the MOG area for years and has had quite a few trips out with the "Onyermarks" team. Anyway on this tour he was determined to pop his bass cherry.
Gary booked himself onto the Clash camping area for a few days. This is Gary settling in
And tempting me with a beer
Anyway on the bass fishing side we had no luck during daylight but Gary eventually picked up a couple of bass during darkness after putting in the hours. He was well chuffed and actually danced a quick jig before putting them back in the water.
After this a mate of mine on the caravan park,George took us out boat fishing on the west side of the MOG. We tried for the mackerel first and they proved very scarce on the day. We did get enough eventually for bait though and baited our lures up with mackerel strip. We started picking up whiting, coalfish, pollack, cod, red and tub gurnard and wrasse.
I had not taken my camera from the bag until Gary picked up this squid
The squid was kept for bait and then shortly after that Gary and George had a double hook up on these two decent cod
Oh well that was Georges tea sorted. Shortly after this the sea started getting a bit wild so we called it a day. We had all caught fish and the craic had been excellent so all in all a good day out on the water.
Check out Garys overhand grip !!
Gary and I have just returned back after another day out with George. This is his boat
Again we could only manage a few mackerel with a sprinkling of herrring amongst them. It was quite lumpy and there were only a couple of boats out. We really were scratching with only a few small pollack, coalfish and whiting coming to the boat. Oh and Gary got a doggie.
Our squid expert Gary changed to his octopus hat and pulled these two out. That was a first for the 3 of us to see two octopus come out on one trace. These two fellahs were carefully shaken off before they inked.
I managed this half decent pollack close in to the rocks
After this we decided to head for home as the wind was starting to get up. Not a lot of fish caught but as you all know the fish are just a bonus. Having a good rabbit/laugh with your mates is a very important part of fishing.
Thanks for the day out George
