He caught plenty of smooth hound to 11lb on crab. Advice he gave me was take your own as the tackle shops crab down there are that small you need 2 or 3 on your hook and at a £1 each I know what I'd be doing

End of April is a bit early for the Smuts and you certainly won't be getting any doubles at that time of year. The main run kicks in late May / early June and lasts until early August. There will likely be a few pups around and maybe fish to 3-4lb but in April I certainly wouldn't be targetting them.

OTOH if there is a spell of warm, settled weather before you go then head a few miles west to Pagham or Selsey East beach and you could enjoy some very good Black Bream fishing. Small hooks (size 2), ragworm (much better quality and much, much cheaper on the south coast than up here - I used to pay £7 per lb from a digger and £11 perlb from the shop) tipped off with a little sliver of squid does the job and take some cuttlefish which can be a killer bait for the better ones. Fish to 3lb are not unusual and give a stonking fight. Fish in daylight / evening over HT: this one was 2 1/2 lb from Selsey East in early May...

You will also have a chance of Bass with this set-up, have spinning rod with feathers ready to go as Mackerel shoals can appear off the shingle any time and if you want to put the hours in a warm, calm night and big ragworm baits can see Stingray caught off Pagham.

No need for crab bait at that time of year down there; smut pups and everything else can be caught on rag tipped with squid whereas if you are using crab then you are limiting yourself to targetting any small smuts that might swim past.

If you want any more info drop me a pm before you go - I lived in the area for 20 years before moving back home a couple of years ago.

spot cheers for the advice ill defo take you up on that offer mate.ill pm you before i set off cheers once again

Hi mate I'm heading down there April 19, the outlaws have a family wedding. Only agreed to go if I could take the fishing gear :D though I'll be fishing a bit further west - probably Gilkicker in Gosport. Drop me a pm before you go and I'll let you know how it's fishing in the area and will give more specific info / directions for the general marks I mentioned above.

As for kit: Two hook clipdown / flapper rigs, 18" snoods and size 2 hooks. Ragworm tipped with a sliver of squid. No need to cast miles especially at Selsey East. And you will need the proper beach gear - the shingle beaches may look like easy fishing but there is tons of floating weed in the water so it's not easy fishing by any means (though a standard 6500 / 7HT / 525 with 15lb line is all you need reel wise). And definitely no need to waste good crab at that time of year; in fact it's probably one of the worst baits you could use in that area in late April / early May.
