Braid Question

Evening!

Heading out over the festivities and I have decided to load one of my Penn 535's with 50lb Berkley Fireline braid! I've never tried this before and my questions are:-

1) I imagine I attach a length of mono to the end?
2) If so what length and breaking strain should I go for?
3) What knot should I use? Same as attaching a shock leader?

Cheers in advance lads!

If its for boat fishing I use about 10/12 foot of mono about 35lb if your using 50lb braid , the best knot and easiest for tying is the Albright knot , find it on utube , you'll find if you get snagged the mono breaks at the swivel knot and you won't lose ya braid , you can feel bites and the bottom a lot better with braid , good luck and tight lines

You dont need any leader or mono on just fish it straight through anyone that says you lose fish with braid with no leader needs to read the instructions on how to set a reel drag :)

Fire line is my fav braid and used it since it came out, i have reels with fireline on over 8 years old and still going strong.

p.s if fishing wrecks having a leader is having a shocker all it does is add's loads more line to snag you up on on the next drift and makes it a tangle fest for you and fish.

Cheers NE1, So normally fishing mono with a Shad say, I would have my mainline clipped to a three way swivel with the sinker directly clipped to the bottom of the swivel with a split ring and a 40lb snood to the Shad from the middle eye on the swivel! Would you use this set up with the set up you mention, only having braid as the mainline?? It seems like I would need a weaker link to the sinker other wise I my might snap the braid??

Looks like ill be trying a few ideas!

I tie all my traces straight to my mainline, even my ling rigs that are 60lb snood line and as i say never had to put braid on my reels, the briad always goes at the knot or sometimes the swival breaks or snaps in the mono.

To break off i always point my rod at the water and put my hand on the reel to lock it...this puts strain on the reel spool but never had a problem in all my years fishing with damage. only time i would say not to do this is if you have a level wind reel, it could trap your fingers, best romoving any level wind from a boat reel.

if you have level wind just use a priest and wrap braid around more times than you would nylon and wait for the snap I straightend the hook on my shad useing 45lb fireline and 60lb snood :D

For me i would never wrap braid around anything two main reasons, 1/ the number of times the braid snaps at the the thing you have wrapped it around and two the number of rod tips i have seen snapped off when the drift beats you to it when half wrapped and snap...mind it does get you off the wreck but i would never tell any body to try it.eact to there own mind thats just my opinion.

Soon be April and able to get out on the water again and if the weather lets us twice a week :)

I always use a mono breakout , purely to save your braid ( which is not as cheap as mono ) you'll find the mono breaks on a snag and your braid is still yours :-) but that's my opinion , each to there own , try and find out ya sell but use cheap Chinese braid to try it , it's not to bad and its cheaper if you lose a half a spool. Tight lines

Got to agree with Rich on all his replies ..... no mono leader just braid right down to the link then everything after is mono for the trace, it always breaks at the mono knot/trace or now and again ... (wost case) at the knot in the braid so losing your link.
ps Best thing to use the priest for is to break the level wind off the reel, they're only put there to up the cost of reel and to try and trap fingers. :D

Roll on April :) :) :)

Going down the boat at the weekend to check it over and see if i can think of anythign else to add to it for next years fun....fun wil be the big word in 2013 as 2012 the word fun was not used half as much as previous years.

Hope its an XXL bottle of polish Richy the fun bit will start when the last drop leaves the bottle. Twinkle Twinkle Little White Boat :D

It is a 1ltr bottle and i would like to think that would do a season, thou that will depend on how much fish blood you lot will get on the boat...i am hoping for LOTS :)
