BRAKES OR NO BRAKES

I currently fish most of my marks with my sl20sh and i wash it every time i get back under warm water.
I oil under the star drag every so often and take the side panel off and give around where the brakes normally are a little lubricating.
I have noticed that when i purchased my sl20sh it had no brakes inside it fitted although i did get 2 sets with it.
So i have not had nest with my reel hardly ever and was wondering if if would be ok without them?........and any 1 good tips on how to oil it with simple instructions ;)

Up to you really Jonny, but if you\'ve been using it WITHOUT any brakes fitted and had no problems with nests or overruns, then why bother fitting them ?.......looks like you\'ve got used to not having them on, anyway.

It sounds like you have been using your end tension as a casting control, there is no way you could be casting without brake blocks without some sort of end tension, I would\'nt advise using your reel like this especially the amount of fishing you do, it will put undue stress on the bearings and internals of your reel, the brake blocks are there for a reason, put two in and adjust you end tension, your reel will last longer. ;)

Gotta admit, there\'s no way I\'d be able to cast without a couple of brake blocks being in action. Never thought about the end tension, Simon, just thought that eventually (given the experience and the confidence to do so), that it would be possible to go without brakes engaged.

marksy1
was fishing next to me on monday night
he was keep nesting his reel (penn 535 )
i had a cast and nested it
there isnt any brake blocks in
it was as fast as a mark 1 rocket

no wonder

Simons right Jonny, you need to readjust your tension knob so that theres only a slight movement on the spool, left to right
have a look on here m8

Just slide the blocks onto the spindle.
It doesn`t matter how far on you put them, cos when you cast the centrifugal force pushes them outwards against the metal circle inside the end plate, causing friction. This is what slows the spool down.
The spool tension knob is the little one under the star drag.

right i have took my sidepanel off and slide them brakes about 5mm along the bar.....cheers lads ;) ...lets hops it doesnt fu8k up tomorrow WHILE o am fishing...and watch my look i get a crap distnce with it as when before i was lashing them oot! :D

Yes thats right one brake block on each bar, I would sugest you adjust your end tension so you have a very small amount of side to side play on your spool then turn it back a quarter of a turn, when if thats to slow for you and you don\'t get any nests try slackening it of a very small amount, a little at a time. Remember its better to have your reel running safe than all out fast, you will enjoy your fishing if you aren\'t picking out nests every cast. ;)
