as above is there much import tax to pay , if any at all?
if there is tax can the shop in the usa not post it as a gift to avoid any taxes as the prices in the states are way below the RIP OFF prices in this country

i was once told anything over 18quid you pay custums tax a quater of total value.

i think if you get it marked as i gift you end up not been insured.and a lot of sellars wont mark as a gift some will.

its all a bit of a gamble you can get stung if you are unlucky.

never had a prob myself yet been told i have been lucky.

I recently bought 2 reels from USA and the shop marked the package as a gift worth less than $40 to avoid any duty charges

some places do send items as a gift if you contact them and arrange it before they post, but as john/r said it does not cover you for insurance. i bought a £228.00 reel + £28.00 postage from america and was charged £38.00 import duty.but imagine if you paid say £200 and it was marked down as £15.50 i dont know where you would stand legaly if the item was lost in the post if you arranged it to be sent as a gift then tried to claim the difference back.

Import and VAT duty rates are 23.7% combined on fishing gear from the States. Import as a gift and if the value exceeds £18 you pay Vat and Import
the above rate.
Buy from the EU and you don't.

well here's something for you, believe it or not it is hitty missy whether you pay import tax and vat, they do not charge everyone they just take a few out and charge them, they don't have the time.

Import tax

Import tax

I collect miners lamps and have imported quite a few from the states. As Alan says it is hit or miss with the customs. I have been hit a few times for the tax but have also had quite a few items slip through the net. If you are buying a squall 15 [525 mag 2] they are about £90 including vat and postage. If it gets stopped in customs you will have to pay around another £35. You can pick a 525 mag2 up in this country for around £140. So to import one you will only save about £15. Is it worth it for the wait and the hassle. If it gets through customs your on a winner.
You are better off getting someone who is going to florida to bring u one back. Get the shop to put line on it and you get away with saying it is a used item so are not liable for any tax. A squall 15 will cost you about £73 in florida at the moment.
