It looks like a rockling but had no beards, was slimmer, felt a lot less slimey, had virtually the same colour and markings as a dog fish and also curled up like one. It was 14 1/2 inches long and fairly slim. It could well be a rockling just never seen one with these markings. Thought it could have been a blenny but was a lot longer, didn't quite have the big rubber lips and had an upturned mouth. Sorry about the pic quality but only had camera phone.

Can't attach pic as too big so will have to put it in the gallery - sorry

I caught it from pottery bank. Thought it was too big and slim for a blenny which in my experience are usually a lot shorter and stubbier with different mouths. Suppose there's loads of species though. If it's a record it's there for someone else as took a photo measured it and returned it. Certainly the biggest one I've ever seen

Cheers lads

It was very close to the british record of 13oz if it was that. All pictures I can find show the blennys have a pattern rather than spots which this had. Think I might give up on he particular species and say it was a blenny lol

Looks like a rocking ! different colours for different areas .ie kelp etc
I think ..........may be rang though
Alan Charlton will know The Oracle of the North;)
