Good site that, spent ages viewing it. Health and safety right out the window during the making of the Tyne bridge lol, my gaffa at work would take a fit if he seen the pics of them working

I never new that Shields had been bombed until i viewed that site.

Shields took a real battering during the air raids, Richy.
The market place was completely flattened in one raid and the remains of those sheltering in the air raid shelter under the market square are still there, today.
The only thing left standing was the Old Town Hall right in the middle of the square. That\'s why all the building surrounding the market are reletively \"new\" - built during the 60\'s & 70\'s.
Just gonna move this to the Chat forum........

Any idea what they were after hitting Tony? ship yards are all i can think of.

There is so much history in the north east that we should be broadcasting to the rest of the county(or keep it quiet to stop visitors) - one i can think of is the first person to be killed on british soil by enemy action during ww1 was killed at hartlepool during a naval bombardment at the heugh.
we really need to be teaching our bairns all this so our forefathers dont get forgotten.

great site johnny yeah my home town blyth got a pounding in the war i remember my mam saying she heard the doodle bugs flying over then her dad getting everyone into the anderson shelter and after it was all over a house three doors away was flattend i sometimes wonder if the old ppl who went throught that came back and see our country now what would they think ? sorr lads thats a bit deep but its friday sorry

Ship yards and coal mining, Richy.
At that time, all industries were heavilly (if not totally) dependant upon coal for fuel.
South Shields had an abundance of both shipyards and coalmines.
St Hildas Colliery was situated right next to the market place (roughly where the Homebase store is now on Station Road.)

I remember my nana telling me that (according to the news at the time) the German bombers had apparently mistook the bridge on River Drive for the Tyne Bridge (same shape) and hit Shields town centre thinking it was Newcastle (don\'t know if that\'s right or not though?)
