ok guys please be patient with me as i am new to the fresh water stuff, to be honest i have not drowned a magget yet but i am looking too start in august.

ok i am looking at starting carp fishing as my job restricts me from sea fishing due to distance and shifts. can any one of you kind gental men out there give some pointers in the type of kit i will need, i have looked at rods, pods, spods, markers, nets, mats, and the list gose on but it seems so expensive to get started. is there a basic setup you require for a good days carp fishing or do yo need to be like a pack horse and carry all of that kit listed above to have a day out.

please help this clueless sea angler to enjoy the sounds and sights of a man made pond.

regards
scott

rather than going out and buying diffrent rods and stuff your best bet is to look on ebay and search for a complete carp set up this way you will get everything you need but it wont cost you and arm and a leg (just an arm lol) no but seriously i wish i did when i first started carp fishing as it cost me a fortune

Hi Scott,
You need a rod, a reel with line on and a hook on the end , after that it's up to you how much else you buy and carry around.
Just take whatever gear you have and fish for them, freeline a piece of bread or a lump of luncheon meat under a float or go down the critically balanced neutrally bouyant hair rig route..... whatever takes your fancy , you will still catch them.

Try and spend a decent amount on a good rod. Nothing worse than fishing with a crap rod. You can have a good rod and a crap reel but the other way round is awful.

hey cat

you can get a full setup for carp, thats a rod 3 piece, carp reel, line on the reel 15lbs i think it is also hair rigs for approx £38 a set suppose to be £100 odd from Go Oudoors in there fishing section,my brother got 2 sets, and there a nice rod and reel and have done him the job infact he says he wont be changing them as hes had some good pike with them and is well pleased with them.

Rod pod dont get a cheapie from ebay there crap and wont last 2 minutes, get a named one something like prologic, fox, prestege prob cost you around 40 for a deacent pod but its worth it,look in the tackle shops to see a one you fancy,as theres alot of cheaply made ones on ebay.

if you want a hold all for your rods, get the koala quiver rodhold all from ebay, alot lighter than the normal holdalls, and smaller holds banksticks brolley, net handle, pod and upto 4 rods,i just got one and think its perfect,it was only £14,and made of good quality material.

Go outdoors was doing fox warrior bite alarms as well they where suppose to be £24 each but was selling them for 12 each.

if you are needing hair rigs ect go to a shop to buy them and not ebay i bought some one from ebay they were rubbish hooks to big/poor knots etc, then you know what your getting,i bought a couple from a shop to see how they were made, now i just make my own alot cheaper.

Hope this helps

Ebay, Ebay, Ebay!

Ebay, Ebay, Ebay!

I would love to know why you guys always recommend Ebay for buying anything?

What's wrong with using your local tackle shop???????????

If I was going to take up a new sport, the LAST thing I would do is go on Ebay and buy something I knew NOTHING about?!? Its the same as using second hand shops! Whats the point of you don't know what you are looking for!

If you use your local shop, the experienced lads (and lasses) behind the counter will be able to advise you on the best rods, reels, and accessories needed to get you fishing correctly. You will be able to get your hands on your new equipment before you buy, and most importantly, know you are buying quality, correct gear!

Wouldn't you rather do this than gamble on Ebay, and find out when it comes, that you have bought some complete tat that is useful for nothing except fire lighting!

Get yourself to your local tackle shop, and get yourself kitted out PROPERLY!

i agree with chucker on this one, i have used flee bay a few times and i have been landed with rubbish on most occations, i have spent many a hard earned pound on my zippi and century beach rods and penn and slosh reels but at the moment funds are tight and i am after as much advice a possible from the guys in the know on this site.

thank you all who have replied and i have taken note of your constructive comments and i thank you all for them.

as chucker said you can not beat your local shop for gear and you get to find out local fishing tips for the lakes that you plan to go on and if you are willing to spend a little money you might even get a little discount to bring you back.

before you lash out have a good think about exactly what type of fishing your looking at - dedicated carping or basically going to pay by the day waters and hoping for the best
i personally have my best carp on a pole, well over 20lbs
this is another, was taken on a pole with 16 elastic

a tench pound for pound in my thoughts a harder scrapper, also taken on the pole

i have taken similar sized on a multifeeder rod, a lot depends on the water your fishing, the average day fishery does not need dedicated carp gear, in fact having heavy lines possibly going to be a disadvantage

as to line, i use 12lbs on my carp reels, never needed anything heavier, i often fish with a lot less on the feeder rod

a pods handy if your fishing off a solid base, if not a couple of bank sticks is ideal

you dont need bite alarms and all the other gubbins either

start slow, buy reasonably decent tackle and dont go mad, you see a lot of carp tackle up for sale because someones gone nuts, purchased the dogs do dahs of tackle, tried it, caught sod all, tried it a few more times and said sod it - dedicated carping can be a long waiting game, more especially if your targeting the bigger more wary carp that have been hooked a few times

give you a clue, heres a snippet from the forum of the clubs waters i belong too, which will give you an inkling into carp fishing for big carp

Its areet not the best for a 5 day trip tho haha

----------------------------------------------------

a fair few carp forums im on you read the same sort of thing from the lads fishing just for carp
yes you do read of other lads taking a fair few big uns, however those lakes tend not to be up this way or are syndicate waters

if your happier with smaller well stocked waters with a good head of smaller upto 8lb carp , mixed in with other fish then you dont need the dedicated stuff, even if a bigger fish comes along, play it right and it will come to the net, take a look at eden medows, strawberry fields and if you dont mind a wee trip, the woodlands at thirsk

first pic looks like ya caught that carp red handed lol

some lovely fish there mate

bloody groundbait n stawberry glug, i looked like a serial killer a few mins before that was caught, have got a mixing stick but i keep forgettin to take it with me :D:D
