casting help

ok, i put my back out at work and i\'m only 18 lol. previously i could cast around 140-50 yards. but since i\'ve had my injury i have been casting using an overhead thump so as not to aggravate my back. obviously distance has been massively reduced. with my back feeling alot better lately i decided to have a few casts over the garden fence this evening (don\'t worry it\'s all fields behind my house). problem being i can\'t seem to get back to my normal casting technique and fluffed up 90% of my casts quite badly. i\'m going to have another go tomorrow and if it\'s the same story i\'m going to have to do something about it. i don\'t know if i\'m holding back self consciously beacause of the fear of nacking my back up again or if my confidence is shot but fishing marks that mainly need a 100+ yard chuck i need to sort something out.

so has anyone got any numbers for casting instructers in the north east? i hope it doesn\'t come to this as it took me forever to get a decent chuck that suits me in the first place and i feel like i\'m starting all over again. it\'s a nightmare. any help is much obliged.

cheers,

flattymaster

Hello mate , I\'ve had a back problem myself in the past ,it takes a while to get your strength and confidence back ,you might want to see a physio for advice .

Hi Mate,
Peter Thain is a good instructor, Im sure someone will have his email.
I have a dodgy back too, excersize it, twists, and bends, but be careful.
I cast over 100yds. about a 4 ft drop, point the rod out behind you, sort of swing itto your right, and bring it round and up ina steady sweep.

Good luck

You could try sending a PM to Peter.........he\'s \"PT\" on NESA ;)

Hi lads and flattymaster,
with regards your back problem - keep active within your pain threshold, don\'t lay up. I suspect that as you\'re only 18 the problem is acute and will resolve in a few weeks. These problems usually affect the lower lumbar spinal region. It is important at the moment to take paracetamol or codeine for the pain combined with ibuprofen for the inflammation. The spine goes into what is called a protector spasm, and it is the muscles surrounding the injured arae that go into spasm. As the spasm continues pain often ensues, so using medication is advised. Use a hot water bottle or a therapeutic Heat pad from Argos these i would strongly recommend, heat is very beneficial for the back muscles, it increases the blood circulation to the area and so relieves the muscle spasm and inflammation. Posture is also very important when driving or seated make sure you use a lumbar roll such as a towel placed in your lower back region to maintain the natural anatomical curve. In bed lay on your side generally with a pillow in between your knees avoid sleeping on your front or back for long periods as this can load your spine, if you sleep on your back bring both your legs up bending at the knees, this will help to unload the spine just try it. Exercises are beneficial and u can get advice from a physio but again exercise gradually don\'t try and run before u can walk.
As for the casting the act of casting itself whether pendulum or over head thump all put added torsion on the back region and can aggravate it, you are the best judge of your pain theshold so don\'t tax yourself take it easy. In time if you take my advice your back should improve although u will be left with some form of long term residual deficits, the important thing is to now look after your back. Hope this helps and best of luck ;)

An excellent post Jw obviously you\'re medically trained ,similar advice was given to me ,apart from being 18 lol ,the only thing I could add would be for Flattymaster to remember that until his back feels better sometimes the fish are at your feet or you can go to places like piers or cliffs where a long hard cast isn\'t that important.

Cheers Steve,
you guessed right i\'m a dual trained therapist O.T/Physio, however i do speak from personal experience although i feel my knackered back is down to all the bait digging and freezing nights stood on the pier. We must be mad hey :P Cheers.

nice post jw. its pretty much cleared up now. it was just alot of bruising and some minor muscle damage caused by falling off a pot of paint and down one or two stairs. i\'ll give it a week orso andif there is no improvement i\'ll get some tuition. cheers for all the replies lads
