How about a summer \"Hagfish stamp and release\" comp on S/Shields pier? Laughing me tats off about the mackerel catch and release comp - who\'s gonna sponsor that one - Marigold?

wirralseafishing have a winter open, were you are only allowed to bring 2 fish to the scales, 1 flat and 1 round fish, it works great and has proved very popular since we introduced it , it cuts down on the amount of dead fish and the weigh in is relitavely quick (we have a pre weigh in if you have a couple of fish that are close)

if you dont fancy this the only way to cut down on dead fish is to up the size limit, our whiting size is 37cm

as for whiting i dont think they survive very well anyway, especially if they have to be dropped back into the water, flatties stay for ages in bucket of water.one ofour lads uses an old artists paintbrush handle to get the hooks out of flatties,he puts the thin end down as afar as the hook and gently spins the fish round the line wraps round the handle and it unhooks usually without any bleeding
