So Lynn and I set off for a week's holiday to a caravan in Sandy Bay, Northumberland with 3 charter boats booked and with information on shore marks courtesy of local angler Karl. We also had predictions of it being "way too early in the season to catch well" ringing in our ears, but we were naively confident!
The farther we travelled south, the sunnier and warmer it became, a good omen pehaps? Arrived at caravan park and our caravan was fabulous, beautiful furnishings and even an en suite!
We decided to seek out our charter boats at Amble and North Shields to avoid getting lost when it mattered......Oh for a SatNav!!
Saturday morning came and we awoke to cloudless skies and not a breath of wind. We met up with Jeff, the Skipper of "Warlord" at Amble and the other 8 guys for the boat's first trip of the season. Very excited about the fishing to come and looking forward to a productive day.
We were armed with chads, hokkais, pirks, jellies, fresh ragworm and squid, so all bases covered, or so we thought........... What we didn't have was day-lites(I'd never heard of them) and Asda whole cooked prawns(who would have thought?). No prizes for guessing what the other 8 guys were all using and catching on!! 59 cod to the boat with Lynn and I having 3 between us, so the other guys averaged 7!! Oops! Still a lovely day out, more knowledged gained and cod for tea. As soon as we docked it was off to the tackle shop for day-lites and Asda for said prawns!
Sunday we were out with Tony, Skipper of "Mistress" on the Tyne. Weather sunny and warm again and this time with the right lures/bait we did really well. Lynn and I had 14 cod, 3 pouting and 2 coalies between us, so we more than held our own with the other anglers..... honour restored!
Both Jeff and Tony are great skippers, very helpful, know where the fish are and I would recommend their boats to anyone.

Its amazing how many tips you can pick up from other anglers. From what I have read it looks like the boating season is starting really well.
