just wanted to know if anyone had ever used cockles as bait, i have never seen them in tackel shops and was thinking if we use other shell fish as bait why do we not use cockles.just something i was wondering has anyone had any success on them????

cheers keith mate thats helped loads just need to find where i can gat hold of some or even dig them myself thanks again you lot really know your stuff cheers mate

me and me dad used to get them when i was a kid growing up in ireland but he never used them as bait, might have something to do with the fact that he used to eat them straight out of the shell without cooking them so we never got the chance to put them on the hook .:o thats why i was asking cos if they were good bait he would have used them but he loves the things for eating and i would have probably had got a clip round the ear for asking to use them as bait:eek: :D

cheers jam cod if the lads tell me more about them i might get me dad to send some over for us where did you get yours from mate

cockles are usually best fished after/during a storm/rough sea....thats probably when the fish can naturally feed on 'em.....

I was gonna post the stornoway link keith! good bunch of lads up there.

I use em a lot up the north west coast of scotland and out on the islands and they are as good as mussel up there IMHO, possibly down tot he masses of sandy areas which are prolific with the little blighters. They are a lot tougher than mussel and easier to hook up as well

Hi Daren
i was once fishing ob Blyth beach, many moons ago when it was known for its good fishing. There was a beautiful sea running but there was very little being caught on either crab or the beautiful Berwick lug I had. Having a little saunter along the beach i picked up half a dozen cockles, first cast bang, second cast bang, ended up with four plump cod best 8lb, and all the other anglers around loking for cockles, used them on quite a few occassion after that with reasonable results. Used to get mine from Budle Bay.

aye there millions in budle bay to collect! and iv e noticed loads of flatties when ive been collecting them.
