I've had a few conger from the shore and boat. I'm no expert but my advice would be this.
Don't skimp on bait, a whole joey flapper or if your using big mackerel trim the flapper Back to about 8". Leave your ratchet on and ignore the initial bite, hit it hard when he moves off and HANG ON! Giving ground will lose you fish after fish, as they retreat into the snags.I've caught them from burrowhead, the mull, bristol channel, Weymouth, Plymouth, but the best sessions I've had were in Ireland, SW coast. There's a death trap mark on the island ov valencia called culoo, never got a conger out despite 50lbs boat gear, massive Ballan wrasse as well on hard back velvet swimmers, (I diddnt get one though) dangerous in a big sea but awsome spot.
I'll have to ask my bro where in Ireland it was, but we were fishing on a small jetty one day when a shoal of mullet swam by, our boy tied a load of mackerel frames to the rope we had as "rubby dubby" we never saw the mullet again but an hour later I noticed the rope moving, so I grabbed it and hauled up a very fresh and angry 10lb + conger! It ended up knocking our boys rod rest over and he eventually managed to kick the thing back in! Still makes me laugh!
Sorry for the long post, I want a conger now! Haha.
