Well lads if anyone had said "have you ever seen a conger caught off this coast from the boat"? i would have said No , the South Shields Boat Angling Club has not even got one on its record books !
But on sunday morning Keith pulled one in while we were at anchor ! it wasnt the biggest specimen by any means prob about 3 foot long and maybe about 3-4lb but it was a Conger !!!!
Well i never ! i suppose if you dont target them then you dont catch them .but i would have thought that the way we fish for ling is the same way that you target conger so does that mean they arnt on the wks ?
Would be interesting to see what people think ,i know that Souter normally produces an odd one now and then
Made my day and a few nice cod to 6.5lb aswell ;)

Anyway Alan you were right ,it was just a little fun comp ive set up in memory of my Dad who passed away last year .
The "Geordie Jumpa" memorial cup and 50% of moneys taken was for the Heaviest fish
And a nice bottle of whisky and 50% of moneys taken was for heaviest bag
It was just a bit fun to get people out fishing during the xmas and new year
3 boats with a dozen anglers fished on what turned out to be great weather wise:D
Winning his dads cup with a cod of 6lb7oz was Myself
and heaviest bag was also taken by myself with 10lb 2oz 2 cod
There was also a ling of 6lb 2oz for Keith Scott who was just pipped for heaviest bag as well
It was great to get out and to see a few friends turn up .roll on next year any one is welcome

And it was Keith Brown who caught the conger he and jim had a couple of 3 lbers between them

good little comp, it'll catch on,
many boats next year, with mark and lynn having a winter trip aswell,
with lynn taking the honours as usual.
bert, am sure your dad was proud of you, and long may it continue.

A great morning afloat Bert, just a pity the fish were few and far between. The conger was deeply hooked, and while keith was in the
Cabin looking for a tape mesure, i snipped the trace and slipped it
over the side. As Bert said, it was about 3 foot long, and still a
Species for Keiths record.

I have heard of a few being caught over the years from this area but it gets too cold for them to survive. Not this year though. I also recall that they won't feed from the wreck if jiggers are being used it apparently spooks them, don't know how true that is. Problem is they won't be here in great numbers and will be hard to find.

conger

conger

hi bert
only ever had a few conger off the boat, however we did have a lad called billy Knowles, from backworth [billy the bouncer] had a one at 44lbs a good 15plus years ago.
we were targeting ling; and it was slack water and one of them rare days were we sat on the wreck for a good 15minutes
it was the slightest of knocks as well.
weve had about 10-12 strap conger from the yellow can at anchor [ around 10lbs]
but that's in 40 years fishing from the boat,
also again 20years ago we anchor for 6hrs on a wreck targeting conger, took loads of ling and cod. but we did mange a couple of conger in the 20lbs region and a 3-4 monkfish [anglerfish 30lbs]
we had 3-4 go's but never bothered to target them anymore after that
a few used to turn up in the prawn trawl around February,
I think they used to move about a little then to do with spawning.
as I think there is definitely a few conger on every wreck but they are timid and probably nocturnal feeders
cheers allan

that's interesting. I might give that a go myself. When I fished for them on the IOM I used a sliding ledger rig with a Mackie flapper and it was on ground. They are mainly scavengers so probably another reason jiggers don't work. But they give a hell of a good fight, the reason being is that they can swim backwards.

Used to get some big congers at Cairnryan breakers jetty in the eighties fishing from boats or shore in loch ryan. You certainly know when you've hooked into one.

yes some big conger around that old jetty. They also shore fish for them at the Isle of whithorn. I think it's the gulf stream that keeps them happy over there.

Great post Alan ! it looks like the conger are here But not in great numbers so a night trip @ anchor over a huge lump of wreckage should winkle the odd one out if you are patient !! thanks for all replys chaps keep them comming
