listening to the fishing show thats on at 6am on saturaday (radio newcastle),it was mentioned that a lad had caught a good size conger from northumberland area,my mate got one last year from newton that was a cany size,the presenter said that he thought if anyone tried for conger with wire or high b/s mono hooklinks and fished the likes of newton-craster-ect there might be a few really big ones turn up,he said the ones that get caught are by lads casting out a fair way fishing for cod and that the conger are right under your feet.anyone tried for a one?.i know its now to late as the spring/summer would be the best time but i fancy giving it a go next year.anyone know the best size hooks -bait ect and best way to fish for them

you never know whats lurking just below your feet until you give it a go mate, could be a big lump waiting to come up have fun unhooking it, dont forget your foreceps

Davy Maddison caught a nice one a few years ago from the carrs at cresswell, he wasnt targeting conger so it was caught on mono

Close Up the Mull I use a 10ft 6-8oz uptider ,Penn 535 ,30lb line to a bimini tied 80lb shock leader ( just for abbrasion resistance ) running lead on a rotten bottom and a short wire trace of maybe 16 inch with a 6/0 to 8/0 . Macky head and guts or a flapper is the bait . The reel is left out of gear with the ratchet on . I only use wire incase a tope picks up the bait , Id probably use 150lb nylon on this coast . Casting distance is probably less than 15 yds and many times especially at low tide the leader knot is well out of the water . Last year I had 11 to 16 1/2 lb in 4 sessions on the Mull ( I have had them a fair bit bigger )and probably lost the same amount as alot of the time they just hold onto the bait and back off under some rock , if you keep the pressure on , sometimes anything up to 20 mins, they will either give up and youll get them out or they will let go of the bait and you'll get back a bait with a bite shaped indent but they havent been hooked . I find the best way to unhook them is with a T bar disgorger or long nosed pliers .
Just find some deep water , plenty of kelp and boulders , ledges and give it a go you can always fish a normal rod while the conger rod fishes itself .

great info mate,ive bought a old touring caravan so plan on going over the mull a few times next year.wor lass will be with me so ill need to find a site with a couple of good bars near by and some deep water--lol

yeah i just bought a bait pump from this lad he was telling me about it well done him think he said it came from swine dene

Me and my mate fished Cullernose one day a few years ago. I was watching my rod when the tip just went over, lifting the butt off the ground. When I grabbed it, I had to let what ever it was just run by loosening the drag. It was slow and steady. When I did hit it, it just kept going for a couple of minutes, then all went slack. Reeled in to find my hook trace bitten through.

Also had similar experiences at Eyemouth, close in.

Fish for them in Ireland and stopped using wire as they end up kinking it. Use 100lb nylon and it's easily enough. Keep checking it and easy enough to change snood if it's wearing. We fish for them at our feet so 40lb mainline and just a 2oz ball lead on the line, bead and heavy swivel to the snood just to sink the bait. One mackerel makes three baits, 2 fillets and head, guts and tail left a third. Would think any of the harbours that unload fish will have them there at least at some times.

a had a go up at dunst castle this year using some heavy mono traces that i got from id fishing using my greys appolo n slosh 30 blanked but looking forward to nect year to give it another go

hello i got that eel up swine dene 1 3lb 1oz just abt 30 yards out was after cod lucky i had the ttr and 535 with me canny fight off it lucky when i landed it as it bit thru my 60lb snood plus the hook ended up on rocks if you are gonna target them deffo use wire traces as they will snap ur line unless u lip hook one

me & my m8 used 2 get sml strappy's in blyth harbour where the trawlers offload. even a sml strappy will take a macky flapper. i was speaking 2 a diver who dives the river 2 free ropes from the props ect from the trawlers when they r all snagged up & he was telling me it is unbelieveable the size of the congers & cod that r swimming around the trawlers in the river feeding on the fish, prawns & crab that gets chucked overboard.
