Had a great day out at Craster today with Dougy Hogg on his new yellow boat (soz can't remember it's name) There were 10 of us on board, didn't go very far out and first drop was only about 1/2 mile out of the Harbour. We were straight into the fish, codling, codling and more codling. The sea was so flat we could have been on a boating lake. There was very little tidal movement during the whole day. It was cracking day weather wise, feeling the effects of sunburn now! We landed 147 fish between us, 95% being codling of between 2 - 4lbs. Biggest of the day was about 5lbs. Other species captured included a few mackerel: sandeels x2, wrasse x1: a couple of small ling: One poor cod and the odd whiting. Fish were taken on daylights baited with macky and rag. Also black and clear hockeyes worked well. Bare hooks with macky or rag on a whitby ripper worked well and so did silver pirks with treble hooks, be careful though as Craster rough ground can be tackle hungry, however with there not being much tidal pull losses were kept to a minimum. I got a couple of codling on white shads but couldn't put the shads to much use today because of there being very little movement of water. Sorry my mate big Mick Dunn missed out on the trip, you would have enjoyed it mate and i'd have put a bet on that you would have held down the groundbait today because of it being so calm.(ha ha) Everyone came away with plenty of fish for the table, nice to see everyone catching for once and plenty of happy smiling faces.
