Durham Police S.A.C. 20/05/07

Since we have a few police on the site can someone tell me if it was true about people being charged with trespassing and on what pier it was?

Also what is the law if it is a public venue funded by the people of Shields? Can’t hey really stop you from fishing Shields pier? Am not brushed up on my law but I think they can’t unless it poses a danger to yourself or others.

Trespassing is not a criminal offence. There is an offence of aggravated trespass but i cant imagine circumstances where it would apply to a pier. Its more concerned with travellers setting up unauthorised camps, protesters etc

Only involvement police might have is to assist land owners to remove tresspassers if there is likely to be a breach of the peace. i.e the people fishing refuse to move and start to kick off!

Regarding shields pier, I would imagine the pier belongs to the port of tyne authority, If they want to pass a byelaw to stop you fishing there i suppose its up to them

Well the pier is looked after by the port of Tyne but was build with public funded money and could be a sticking point if closed.Tony Cutter will know the in's and out's of it am sure.

Lots of things are built with public funded money mate but you would still be in bother if you went in when they were closed to the public. For example local civic centre, schools etc.

I think the staus of the pier will be very particular to the pier and will need researching
