Hi all, just wondered if any you guys could advise me what gear I need for boat fishing in terms of hook and swivel sizes, leads, day lite size, perks, lures? etc etc...Only get out a few times a year but always borrowing gear from the skipper and feel guilty if I lose it! Decided to buy my own rod and reel as I always look forward to the trips out, so any advice on accessories would be most appreciated. Cheers :)

Hi if you search on here there is a load of previous threads that will give you a full list of gear you might need m8;)

Rod: something between 6 and 9 ft that feels nice. The black, solid carbon, one piece Fladden Maxximus are good, Ugly sticks also have a good rep. Don’t go too light or heavy.
Reel: Penn 320LD or Shimano TLD15 are both great reels with lever drag (handy but bumps up the cost of the reels) slightly smaller is the charter special. Otherwise just use a larger beach reel like the Abu 7000 size.
Line: Load the reel with 300yards of 50lb braid. Berkley Whiplash if you don’t mind the price. Tie a Gemini clip to the end.
Rigs, starting with a swivel that can be clipped to the main line; tie up a few dozen rigs with muppets, hokais, etc on 8 inch droppers or add a shad on a 3ft trace. 40lb mono is weaker than the main line but still pretty tough to avoid abrasion, some people use stronger though.

Leads: cannon ball type sink and counter the current better than others. Take a couple of dozen from 8 to 14 oz. You can get away with lighter if the wind and current are gentle but as soon as any drift starts you’ll not be popular if when they move and cause tangles. Add a few 12oz pirks if you like.
