Hello, this is my first post i created an account in hopes this story would be of interest here

Wednesday night after work we decided to go fishing, we set off at half 6 despite the terrible weather. I first me and a friend went to the pier .. after 45minutes we left because people were only catching on the end and ive never been the biggest fan of piers or mackerel fishing anyway

So in the car leaving the pier i asked my friend if we should call it a day or not because the rain was proper coming down now haha, after much debate we decided to give a nearby beach a go to do some beach casting with ragworm we had leftover from a previous night

the beach was dead, probably because no1 in their right mind would be out in this weather :D
Anyway after my 5th cast we were discussing how depressing the weather was and suddenly my rod jerks and pulls the tripod over, i chased the rod which was being gradually dragged into the sea lol!

After a mean fight i finally managed to land this beast of a Fish ! i have caught alot of 5lb ++ cod etc on boats and alot of others such as squid dorado etc but this is by far my best fish and on a night it came so unexpected i guess it makes up for countless nights of flatties as id been chasing bass for a while, i really didnt expect on this size in the north east, it was a sweet 5lber

Was this from the big beach at South Shields mate?

Lovely fish mate, well done.

If you leave the scales on you can hoy it on the BBQ whole with a few herbs etc in the gut cavity. That way the flesh will get the smoky BBQ flavour as well, just make sure the flames have died well down before you cook it.

This was a Bream I got a couple of years ago so you can see what I mean:

The scales protect the flesh from burning through the skin

I fished there in the rain Wednesday morning, nothing but a flounder.
What a difference 12 hours makes eh?:D

Haha indeed ! I guess it was just my time lol.

At Stewart I had no idea how to cook it tbf , it's 25 inches long so won't fit on the BBQ but I don't want to cut its head off because I like keeping the fish whole !
So you're saying its not worth de scaling either ?

Depends if you want to eat the skin. If it is too big for the BBQ and you need to fillet it or take some steaks from near the head then I'd take the scales off and then wrap it in foil parcels with a drop of white wine, some lemon juice and some fresh herbs / dried chilli flakes to your taste (coriander and chilli flakes go really well with Bass but if chilli is not your thing go for more traditional parsley or maybe chives)

I'm a fan of chilli so I'm gonna have to give
That a go cheers!

That bream looks pretty nice, am I stupid for thinking you caught that in england ?
I went fishing in Portugal last month for golden bream and its a lovely fish

The Bream came from Selsey East beach in Sussex. Along with the Smoothhounds they are the only thing I miss about fishing on the south coast, one thing I certainly don't miss is pulling in 10lb of weed on every cast.

Enjoy the Bass, it is quite a firm fleshed, robust flavoured fish that stands up well to asian flavours like chilli
