Fish with rotten patches on them

My oldest lad caught one last friday night, a codling about 1 1/4lb and it had rotten patches on it looked like some sort of cancer if you look at the photo you can just see one part of this on it's cheek near it's mouth, I've caught a few of these over the years as well, so it got me wondering exactly what it is.

He does well for a young un like, we all need that bit of luck, but he seems to have it in abundance, he had 13 of the rat house that night, pity only 3 were worth keeping for him though, he should do better this week though seeing as we've managed to get our hands on some fresh live peeler
