Generally speaking, a hard bottom will be indicated with a thicker (top-to-bottom) contour line because it reflects most of a transducer\'s sound pulse. A soft, mucky bottom will absorb sound and return a weaker echo, resulting in a thinner contour line. However, a feature Bottom Line® calls GrayScale makes it easier to see the difference between hard and soft bottoms. All Bottom Line units display GrayScale to indicate very strong reflections from the bottom. The thicker (top-to-bottom) the checkering, the harder the bottom.

Have a look at the link it also explains how a fish finder works.

Have a look here as well-

Hi Mickey,

The fish shape means that the automatic function in the fishfinder has spotted something that could be a fish .......... It`s nearly always NOT, I suggest you turn off the auto bit that detects \"Fish\" or else youell be stopping over every little bit of rubbish in the water and trying to catche it :) LOL . I, and many more I`m sure use the fishfinder \"as it`s called\" as a sonar, simply detecting bottom shape, texture and structure, in the main looking for holes in rough ground or wrecks furthur out. This is then the places where fish are likley to gather, A \"For instance\" is to find a wreck, stop exactly over the top of it and using the plotter function on GPS see which way the drift takes you, then run back along this line exactly and watch the sounder till you are PAST the wreck (or lump) then stop the boat and drop your lines. This way you will guarantee to drift over the wreck with best chance of catching above and behind it.
Good Luck :)

Mickey ,

As norman said , leave the fish symbol OFF . Its a load of nonsense . try to get some of the lads to show you theirs and get more experience from different types . Look for features on the bottom thats more important imho .

knock the sensitivity down a bit. at the end of the day you\'re after a good impression of what the bootom looks like, features, hard or soft ground etc. too much sensitivity and it\'ll just fill the screen wilth clutter, none of which is likely to be fish

get a fish finder that has a 1000 watt transducer, you dont need to wind in to check your bait then...haa haa,and it cooks your fish on the way up
