Fishing around Roker

I joined this forum today after reading bits and pieces of it over the last few weeks. Ive recently arrived back home after been travelling round the world. I fished a little in Australia not catching much, then spent alot more time fishing in New Zealand catching some amazing fish, mainly kahawai and a couple of big King Fish. After leaving there i knew that i wanted to carry my new hobby on when i got home.

Been back in sunderland nearly 3 weeks now and dont go back to work until after the bank holiday, so with the spare time ive had on my hands ive been down Roker pier four times. Each time that i have been ive caught up to a dozen small Coalies, i swear it could be the same one each time! I know i should'nt complain because i could be catching nothing, but im just keen to catch something else. Something to take home and cook might be nice!

I went down to the Rathouse corner for the first time this morning (at 4:00am) in the hope of maybe getting a whiting while it was still a bit dark with tide high, again nothing but Coalies! Ive experimented with various baits (Ragworm, Lugworm, Mackarel, Squid and mussel) same result each time..

Im still pretty new to the fishing game though and am learning from my mistakes and realise it takes a bit time. Im not sure if im after advise as such just wondered if anyone had any recommendations for any decent local fishing spots where i may encounter other species, i dont drive though and live in Fulwell so ive been thinking somewhere not too far maybe anywhere along the river Wear, Marsden or S.Shields... Any suggestions are appreciated!

Dave

Hi Dave and welcome to NESA.

You could do worse than try the big beach at South Shields for some flatty's, and South Shields pier has started to produce some decent Plaice now too. Have a look through some of the recent catch reports and you will get some good idea's there.

welcome to nesa mate
why not have a go at shields pier for the plaice they are starting to show up , not massive at the moment but i have had 4 bout the 1lb mark and a fair few bout half lb to threequarters lb and a couple of cannny flounders bout 1.5 lb in recent weeks off the pier , you dont have to go to the end either between the brigade hut and first gate should do if your luck is in

Cheers for replies.

Looked at the recent catch reports as suggested, and yeah S.Shields pier looks promising. I might see if i can get there for a few hours on Saturday.

Bait wise, do you think Rag/Lug worm would be alright, mussel maybe?

Just had a look at the tides for Saturday too, high tide 17:17, would a couple of hours either side of that be about the best do you think, or are the fish you've mentioned not governed so much by tides?..

I'm not a great expert on Shields pier but as Bob (waco) has said to try the Brigade hut to the first gate I would say you have the times spot on. It would'nt be the fish governed by the tide just the fishing mark itself. For bait I would use Rag and Mackerel, they will take Lug but I have always done better with Rag and Mackerel. Smallish hooks on a flatty or scratching rig, maybe a few bright beads too and you should do ok.

rag worm usually the best bait, but mackerel, crab, sand eel, bluey, and lug can also catch the plaice but keep it in the shade as heat and sun dry it up fast, as for when most lads fish that area on flood tide and hour or 2 back, you can catch plaice all stages of tide its only the rocks that show at low water that hinder you

44 ---45 mark on flood can produce plaice also round end of pier on ebb tide can be productive for plaice. a few years back three lads fishing the end had bout 16 differenet species of fish. hope all this has been helpful

Cheers for the offer Wavy Davy, i would do another time. but this sunday around then i'll be at the SoL watching Darren bent making a mockery out of Man U's defence or Rooney tearing ours apart... Possibly the latter!

Not sure if i'll make it tommorow now but definetly before i get back to work on tuesday im gona get myself down S.Shields pier and hopefully bag myself a Plaice or such for tea!

Cheers Waco & willywetegg, im definetly gona be following your advise, think my daughters probably even got some toys that i can steal some colourful beads from to use on my rigs!

I'll let you's know how i get on!
