i see this argument every year and it always COMES FROM THE SHORT CASTERS

how do you know it comes from the short casters ? you dont. i can put a rig a long way if needs be.

i think the answer to this is knowing when to cast short and knowing when to cast long, not knowing who can cast furthest and who cant.

being able to chuck is another string to your bow but it oftens blinds those who see it as the be all and end all.

people just devolop casting egos and in some cases they aren't infact that good at all.

Not at all mate. My reply to your post was in response to your post header 'a bit of sense at last' which to me implied that all the previous posts apart from the one you quoted were stupid. Stores post was good and obviously his reputation as an angler is without question.

I fish eyemouth, st abbs, coldingham and many other shots with a 30 yard lob and get results sometimes but like I said the thread starter was just asking for advice on the option of a big chuck over rough ground to which I think he received some good advice. I personally like to fish two rods on these sort of venues, one short and one long, it just covers more ground at the same time and occasionally the long cast will produce.

Perhaps if I expand my point it might help. I must admit I'd put myself in the short caster category (100 yards or less). I have nothing but respect for anyone who is taught, or learns, to cast around 200 yards and it certainly gives them the edge in certain circumstances but the opening question referred to, specifically, fishing heavy ground and by that I took it to mean fishing in the weirs. If you cast 200 yards on the majority of heavy rock marks in the NE you have cast beyond the weirs and onto the sand, hard or broken ground that back them. This may well be where the fish are and, by my own admission, I'd never reach them and therefore I may well blank. With regard to the question I still maintain that many anglers cast too far, probably because they are ignorant (in a nice way) of where the fish are to be found. Good casters are only good because they cast the right distance.

totally agree.

my points are intended as in general and never aim to point at individuals(as some seem to summise) however i stand by what i said and also what arc stated. i definatly agree stores that there are a lot out there who put a bait as far as they can when a more variable approach to seeking the fish would be a more consistant way to achieve better results.

Basically my point is that the longer your able to cast, the more options you have.got a few examples of individuals consistent success in mind but stating that online would be unfair. this is fact, not opinion and definatly not ego.
me for one is improving on distance each season however would not see myself as a huge caster, as pendulum is not ideal and have converted to a shortened progressive arc.

greatest respect to most anglers on here like yourself stores , but there is a minority on this forum, who's patter is, to put it bluntly, pathetic.

Top and bottom of this issue has got to be that if you can't cast to where the fish are feeding on a mark your going to blank! Sometimes that means lobbing 30 yards, other times it means clipping down and blasting it! I learned my lesson years ago fishing at range on the chems, when a bloke set up next to me lobbed a lump of mussel 30yds with a fixed spool loaded with at least 30lb line, and pulled a 13lb cod out first cast! Another time I arrived at lynmouth only to find the sea raging, with a gale force easterly coming in. I set up a clipped down rig and couldnt make even 50yds, after holding my rod for 10 mins the lead broke out and I landed a nice 12lber. Which I had weighed at bank house club and took that years leasure hf trophy! If I'd not had the ability to cast distance I wouldn't even have been able to fish. But casting dosent make you a good fisherman, I'm still learning all the time! All the best lads!

You've hit the nail reet on the head there mate, couldnt have put it better myself.

A remember around 2 or more years ago in summer, I was fishing the pier with waco and two others anglers (who arnt on NESA) who I wont name and shame as they kept taking the **** of me...

This is because I was 'apparently not casting as far as them, but my mate waco could tell if a was or not, but in any case a sharp shut them up coz even if a was casting shorter than them I was getting nice fish (plaice) every cast, and they wernt getting nowt...

Just goes to show how very true your comment is buddy.
