fishing rough ground

What do you think the best way to fish rough ground either rotton bottom or 35lb line straight through. Tried using a rotton bottom the last time i fished and was lost a sinker almost every cast. Had 25lb line and 20lb rotton bottom i don't mind loosing gear fishing heavy ground but it was getting a bit frustrating.
Thanks Mark

yes 35lb line straight through would be best especialy if distance inst needed. were abouts are you fishing?

am afraid it goes with the territory losing leads at eyemouth, afew weeks ago a heard of one lad actually lost around 20 + leads in 5-6 hours

i was up 2 weeks ago with s/shields club and lost 8--9 leads in 6 hours but always expect a lead a cast about 2--3 cast an hour approx 15 leads a take with me, and always feel pleased with my self if a come home with leads

i use 40lb breaking strain main line, and a basic rig of a metre length of same line 4/0 hook on one end 5 oz lead on other end, with figure eight knot roughly in middle which leaves a small loop to tie main line onto, and also use a rotton bottom using lttle rotters or upside down genie clip this works for me and lose very littlt gear

hope this helps mate

snap m8 i use the same on all rough ground. eyemouth is heavy on leads but i fish around st abbs more & is just as bad but i dont mind it if i loose all my leads up abbs because its less weight 2 hump back up those cliffs lol.

I know people who cut up bike innertube & fill it with wet sand & tie the ends, if it gets snagged it will either stretch & pull out or you lose it but so what. Only good for short casts though of course, so good enough at most places.

ive been making these for the last few years , looks a bit daft if anyones around you and your hoying inner tubes around , the only prob i have is getting the heavier weight but glueing two together does for me , i cut a lengths from a couple of inches upto 12 fold them in half and super glue them , then the open ends are turned in about an inch and glued down then an eyelet cut into the double thickness for your line and away you go , if im fishing wheres theres no sand or small stones i take a small bag of fish tank gravel with me :)

Thanks for the info lads i normally use a pulley rig with a lead link and rottor on the bottom will keep things simple and up my main line to 35lb
Cheers Mark

i find a lead lift also helps minimize tackle losses also getting it up from the snags a lot faster also.

i asked tony taylor a while back about rotton bottoms and he told me he rarely uses them.

Could try one of these mate, here's Davey modelling my Scarborough gear at Beadnell........60lb Trilene straight through, that takes some snapping!!:D:D

If you don't want to go to such extremes then I'd go for around 40lb straight through with a very simple one hook flapper for rough stuff where you're just plopping from around 10 - 70 yards or so - minimum fuss & minimum loss if you get stuck. A very loosely set breakout style gripper can sometimes help prevent your lead finding it's way down those annoying little gaps in the rocks.

I still prefer 30lb line with a 60lb shock/rubbing leader most of the time though, with some sort of rotten-bottom (I usually use those escape-links) if it's a very rocky bottom. If it's just thick kelp I dispense with any sort of rotten bottom & usually just use a plain lead and rely on riving power to get gear / fish back.

It's also worth trying different lengths of line to your hook & lead over different ground - I sometimes find long traces work better, other times shorter.

Cheers, Gary :)

Have a think about the pattern of hook you are using as well. Something like a mustad viking will bend out of a snag with 35lb line meaning you get your gear back. A more heavy duty hook won't bend out.

I dont fish very rough ground much but when I do, the only hardware I use is a rotten bottom clip and a hook. No swivels or clips etc. Everyting is tied with blood loops, therefore keeping costs down, and less bits of metalwork to get trapped in rocky crevices

Cheers
Dean

If your fishing in heavy kelp, its usualy your hook getting stuck not the lead.
Only use single hooks that will bend under pressure.
As for leads, use long grip wires bent at 90 degrees. This will stop the lead dropping into crevises and getting stuck.
If your fishing past the rough onto smooth ground, try a lead lift.
The clip on Breakaway are the best.
