Fishing the rocks at Cresswell

I would like to fish the rock marks at Cresswell but I am unsure if my ABU 6500 CT Elite would be up to the job. I have fished the open beach there with little success, only 2 flounders and a coalie. Any advice on rods, reels and line would be greatly appreciated.

i havnt used that multiplier so dont know whether its up to the job, but i know most people tend to use 7000 size multipliers and upwards off rocks, i use mainly my slosh off the rocks round there. I think the reel would be ok off cresswell beach and druridge. Im sure there will be others that have used the reel that can help as well.

whenever i fish the carrs i use my supermag or sl30sh,BUT my mate who lives in lynemouth uses a 6500 all the time,and he has been fishing up there at least 20yrs with no probs using the 6500,actually the area he fishes most is bog hall,i.e boghall rocks the headagee etc,which is a lot more heavier ground than the carrs or the gut,but to be honest i wouldnt choose to use a 6500,but if it works for you keep to it,if not change it

When you say the rocks at Cresswell, I presume you mean 'the Carrs' (the ones right at the southern end of Cresswell beach opposite the Ice cream shop). I fish this mark myself a lot, and if you fish the north facing part of the rocks - casting N or NW, then you are casting onto clean ground. However the edges of the rocks are covered in thick Kelp, so if you hook a decent fish you have to 'bully' it through the Kelp.Therefore I would say your reel is a bit on the light side. I use a Penn 535 with a long leader, so I have plenty of heavy line on the reel, if I am landing a fish and I can pull it through the Kelp. As for the front of the rocks casting E, I don't fish here myself, but there is a lot more Kelp and snags here so your present reel would be unsuitable.. Good luck and by the way it fishes best on a SE sea

You will wreck any 6500 or 7ht using them in heavy ground. You might get away with it for one session but not much more.

A slosh or penn will do the job no poroblem as they are far more robust.

Thanks for the advice, anyone know where I can get hold of a 535 or slosh on the cheap? I don`t want to get rid of the 6500 as it is a great reel for distance casting on open beaches and it handles really well. I have got a virtually brand new abu 6000 that I have used just once that I would consider part exchanging on a 535. Do any of the local tackle shops do part exchange?
