flattie hooks

im using kamasan crab hooks in a size 1 or 1/0,when i fish the middens i can get the hook out of a fish using a Gemini Fish Disgorger 9 times out of 10 but finding on druridge im having to cut the line and leave the hook in the fish, could be that the fish are staying put when they find the bait and not giving a good knock till the bait is right down, dont want to force the hook out and kill the fish, ive tried using bigger baits but this makes no difference.on breakaway tackles site they are saying to use circle hooks to prevent deep hooking on small flat fish, anyone tried these for flatties or could recomened a better hook

I used some small cirlce hooks a couple of weeks ago size 1 I think?, lip hooked the fish (all flatties) great and came out no problem.

Find them a pain to bait up though, but they do work as far as Ive used them

I tried size 1 circle hooks mate, the small flatties took it deep and the bigger one's were lip hooked.

I tried long shank hooks with the same result.

I find the only way to stop the deep hooking is to use a Drop-shot rig.

YouTube will help you mate.

I've never used the circle hooks but find i have less problems unhooking flatties by using a long shanked hook with the barbs flattened down with my pliers.

Always used aberdeens with flattened barbs for them myself, with few problems.

There was a thread on here not too log ago with a link to a video that showed how to unhook them via the gill cover when really deeply hooked. Never tried it yet but it looked good.

I use that same method real easy to do,
Slide a Gemini disgorger up through the gill and out its mouth, put the line through the disgorger and pull it through its mouth n back out through the gill, un clip the line from the disgorger, then pull the line and hook towards the rear of the fish this turns the hook around there fore unhooking the fish, you can then pull the line and hook straight out its mouth

style of hook won't stop deep hooking, if they are going to swallow it they will, to make unhooking easier use barbless hooks or flatten the barb and use your disgorger. Using barbless hooks for flatties eels, makes no difference to catch rates.

i've used same method 4 years now with no probs, even use it on deep hooked whitties.
another little tip is- when it comes 2 pulling the hook & line back through the mouth 2 free it, give the line a few turnes round hook shank like u would fixing a pennel hook only the hook will b pulled out the mouth bend first so it stops the hook point getting caught again.
