I have just bought a bag of fresh muscles from the super market for a session tomorrow.
Before I attack the closed shells with a knife could anyone tell me is there a easy way/ technique to removing them?
Thanks in advance

Hard 2 explain on here but whatever you do dont use a sharp knife a very short butter knife ground right down about 2/3 inches is best its really trail and error but mind ya fingers

try putting in frezeer fro15 --20 mins should make it a tad easier as it partially open s em

Thanks for your help lads. I have done a search of the forum and another suggested method was to pore boiling water over them and then cold to stop them cooking. This opens the shell supposedly and makes it easy to remove.
Has anyone tried this method?

used to do that m8 tip some hot water in a dish drop them in as soon as you see them open up remove from dish if you leave them any longer they are cooked but still do the job if that's the bait of the day.
if you are going to use a knife take notice of advice given by EFC forever

i just use a tea spoon m8,
i filed down 1 edge of the handle 2 make a blunt knife then filed down 1 edge of the spoon 2 put a edge on it 2 scoop out the mussel.
i use fresh mussel 4 all my matches so i go through alot of it & the spoon works a treat.
bill.

I went with the boiling water, quickly followed by cold and then removed the meat with a small spoon which was time consuming but a lot faster than trying to remove them by prising the shell open with a blunt knife.
The meat after putting boiling water on turned a different colour and firmed up which will be Easier to wip onto the hook, but will it loose anything that a raw muscle would have?

stay away from boiling water. its more for the lads who sell it to the tackle shops:rolleyes:

bright reddy orange fresh stuff's what ya want. the stuff that cotton doesn't cut though. the stuff where cotton slices through usually a bright shade in yellow is that boiled crap you get from (some) tackle shops.

ha great idea bill.
get ya sell on dragons den:p

That looks to be a little more time consuming than when I pored boiling water over mine tonight, but you have ended up with a much better bait than me by freezing them and using a blunt knife.
I am going to try and source some bigger muscles for next time and try this method.
Thanks to everyone who has helped
