heard tales like that many times, and all say they will take a drop net the next time, but the chance of getting another fish of a lifetime may never happen again, if you are fishing somewhere, where you can not land a fish, take a drop net or someone with very long arms

Total nightmare mate, not anywhere near the same scale but the same thing happened to me tonight. I was fishing Hendon prom for the second day in a row looking for my first size Cod of the season. Have just started fishing again after many years and although I have had a few small half pound codling from Roker pier over the past few weeks I had not had a decent one yet. Anyway after few hours of pretty rough seas I got hooked into something decent only to get it to the side of the prom, seeing it beached on the shingle. First attempted lift and I misjudged its weight it was too heavy to get over the railing in one movement, so I lowered to take more slack and lift again and it dropped off. I saw it clearly and it was a nice fat codling of around 3 pounds. Totally gutted !!! Nothing compared to your lost beast but I feel a little bit of what your feeling as this would have been my first fat coddy since starting again after many years not fishing. It is gutting but just makes you want to get out there again because it is still there waiting for next time !!!

i would snap my rod before i tried to hand ball a fish if your reel is in the down possition keep hold of your spool in one hand other hand on ya line and rod then swing the fish out

We always use 60-80lb hook lengths in the winter.Good quality 35 lb
reel line straight through,or if the ground's not too bad,20-25lb reel line,
with a long 80lb shocker, making sure that the leader is on your reel, before
your trace leaves the water. As long as the hook has a good hold, you have
a fair chance of getting a good fish out.I've helped handball a 14 pounder
up the side of a pier,as it was too rough to use a dropnet.;)

Simlar thing happened to me last year, got a slack liner, got it reet near the edge and my mate started handballing then heard a splash, looked over just in time to see it swim below!!! Turned out my hook had snapped! Blokes fishin next to me recons it was a double figured cod........gutted!!!!

I'm sure yer will get another chance

Happened to my dad when we were fishing up dunstanbar castle last year it was a double figure cod and his hook link snapped when I was hand balling it up worst thing was I left the drop net in the car.
Fair to same there was some choice words but he's speaking to me now lol

Happened to me a couple of years ago in jersey when trying to handball a ray up, still hurts to this day. Counselling, that's what's required mate:D

Know exactly how you feel ive had 2 very nice fosh drop off on me this winter already the 1st one was about 6lb the second was about 7lb both on the lift and both from shields pier

As a newcomer to sea fishing I was suprised not to see more drop nets in use on the piers. When coarse fishing we always set a landing net up. Why is it that people don't seem to bother ? Are they more trouble than they are worth ?
