Good Friday on the pier

Spent the day on South Shields pier today from 9.30 to 5.30. Started off at the 45 mark looking for plaice, the sea looked a bit lumpy but I thought I'd give it a shot anyway. I loaded up a pulley wishbone with two ragworm and bang, straight into a fish, not a plaice but a decent size codling which I kept for my supper.
The fish were steady all day, codlings and coalies but no plaice:(. One of the coalies was sized but I'm not fussed on it so it went back. The fish were undersized but not the tiddlers I've been getting lately so it was canny sport. Tried down the first gate area later on and had a go with the float but nothing doing.
A great day weather wise once that chilly wind dropped, even saw a submarine come in between the piers which is a first for me. all in all a good Friday :)

Some pics from today.

Nice one Mark, enjoy your tea. Think the waters a bit mucky for the Plaice at the moment, we really need a clam, setled spell to bring them back in

Hello m8 , well done today , it sounds like you had a lovely day and a codling... Can you answer a question for me.Can you float fish for pollack off the pier ,do people do it ? and do they catch ? i have never fished SSP .

As Stewart has rightly said, the water is a bit mucky at the minute but in the next few weeks it should clear up and the float fishing will pick up with pollack and wrasse to be had.

Nice one Mark, at least you had fish - unlike us! We did however buy some fresh Hake and had that with chips tonight - beautiful!

Our lass is still busy with cakes in the kitchen so I'll have to wait until tomorrow for my fish, never mind I've got some malts and cans, liquid supper! :D

Great catch report - just looking to see where I'm going on Sunday morning.

Few rigs made with 'the bling' but I'll be happy catching anything seeing as i blanked last weekend!

Anyone know why the submarine was in?

Seeing as ssp has been quiet lately I thought I'd try somewhere different today so went up to Cambois, been there all day and had a handful of tiny flounder and a small coley - had a pretty crap day really, and it was made worse when I kept seeing reports of the cod on ssp, now I see I missed a submarine coming past the pier as well, I give up!

Nice to see the wishbones working mate... I've got a couple of passes out for next week as I'm on leave :-) probes end up on the pier aswell after some spotties unless your up for heading north. Nice fish and a lovely day to be out!
