Haddock Hunt

we're out...........sunday, going to give it a try

probably at anchor inshore first, then depending on the "catch" or lack of it we may move off a bit, a wreck or two possibly

ever hopefull:rolleyes:

What's tic tacs?

Hook size etc?

Only ever seen one, I caught it but all I can remember is crab was the bait, probably because that's all we had.

Is there more chance of one this time of year then? I might get out over the next few days, any kind of fish will do but a haddock would be cool , never caught one.

Soft baits are the secret . Worms and fresh muscle and small to medium hooks . Sounds good on paper tho the proof will be saturday morning I hope lol

You find them on fine ground - soft bottom - mud , muscle beds are a good area !

No wonder I've never caught one then, I havn't fished anywhere other than hard ground and wrecks, I might have to broaden my horizons lol.
I'll have a go for them though, cheers for the help in where to look for them.

Haddock

Hi Bert mate.

As far as Haddock goes in my species list, I've only ever caught one. I caught it around 5 maybe 6 years ago when I was fishing around 3/4 of the way down the big beachon a short night fishing session, towards the cannon. Me and my cousin where fishing together and where casting baits out as far as we could (not that far back then ;)). Think I had a big ragworm and squid bait on. Was gettiing all excited about getting small bites so quickly wound in, got the fish out of the surf and though it was a canny whiting, but then a seen the colour of the fish and that distinctive black spot on the side. I immediatly shouted 'HADDOCK!!! :D:D:D The first one I ever caught and the only one up to now. I was lightly lip hooked, so a quick look at the fish for future reference and off it went back into the surf, fighting fit! :)

They have very small mouths for there size, the one I had was probably no more than 1lb in weight, but was supprised you could catch them that close in, as they are deepwater and mixed to rough ground fish.

Just hope I'll catch more in the future, as they seem very elusive off these shore now, especially when fishing from the shore too, more caught on the boats but not much more. Fingers crossed though (for you and me Bert mate :D)

Use to catch them about 4 miles off st. Mary's lighthouse many moons ago, and about one and a half miles off Souter lighthouse, but haven't tried for a long time. I think most of mine would have been on lug.

Are you going to give it a go for them this weekend Arthur, for old-times sake?

I’ve had plenty of scotch haddock but the last real one I had was off a boat in Arran many years ago. They fell to clam baits.

Haddock, used to catch loads at mark X in my younger days, but mainly at the back of the year, who knows with the seasons being a bit squiffy. :D mainly on Lug / mussel over soft ground. :)

Yes i also had lots of haddock in my younger years before wreck fishing . it just seems like its cod cod cod week in and week out so for a change im looking for haddock till the cod show up :-)

My mates Dad used to fish down the fish quay, MANY years ago and reckons haddock were all over the place.
I caught a couple about 8 years ago from a boat over muddy, fine sand....as you said Bert.
