Haddock

When I was a lad--and that's over 40 years ago we used to get loads when I went fishing on my uncles boat out of Hartlepool. Very rare to catch these days never mind off the shore.

when long lining from the boat and angling wee used to get jumbo haddock about 2 mile of ryhope dene in the mid 19 70s they disappeared most probably over fishing , a real shame as they are better than cod to eat

Nice one. It was only a few years ago, although thinking about it, it was 39 years ago to be precise, that as teenagers we used to catch Haddock by the bag full while jigging from a small boat about 2 mile of Marsden beach. But nowadays you don't here about them getting caught at all. So well done!

There used to be 2 local hot spots for big Haddock.
One was off Hawthorn point and the other was just off Whitburn steel. These were good for them because of the soft ground.
Hawthorn because of the pits tipping and Whitburn from the hoppers tipping there from the old bucket dredger in the Wear.
We used to get loads around 4 and 5 pound, both trawling and from long lines off Hawthorn.
Never saw one taken from the Blast beach though....

What an amazing catch. Congratulations!

No one has caught a Haddock for about 20 years off the shore I'm guessing!

Long lining with me Uncle Alfie off whitburn around 48 years ago, I remember him pulling quite a few Haddock in. Better tasting fish than Cod too.

Around 10 years ago there were a few being caught from Sheilds pier.
If you want to target them try in front of Killantringhan lighthouse just north of Port Patrick on the west coast in April and May.
Had a dozen from there one day a few years back, all you need is fresh Lug.
Also had a few Plaice and Turbot. It does hoy up some nice Bass with some movement.
And the best thing is, you don,t get pestered with the dredded LSD,s.

used to catch plenty through the 80's and 90's in marsden right out to the spoil ground, plenty good jumbos even though it was trawled quite regular.

Had a one 2lb 9 off smiths dock in the Tyne a good few years back when it was very cold. At the time there was some huge whitings in the river between 1-2lb that could almost be mistaken for haddock!! My thinking is they swim amongst the whiting shoals.

If you want a whiting though from the shore get to Iceland!! Easy to catch and taste wonderful done on the barbecue whilst your sitting in the hot tub relaxing after a hectic day catching 2- 300lb of fish.

Strong fish that give great bites my favourite for catching and eating mmmmmmm!
