Had to quote a couple of jobs yesterday in and around North shields. Since this is a management function my days work commitments were done by 11 am and as management have experienced country wide for centuries this left me with the eternal management dilemma of what to do to fill the rest of the day.
Since I dont have either membership of a golf club or a nubile nymphomaniac as a secretary I decided that taking the boat out for the afternoon was a good option. Particularly since I had a load of bait left from the Amble open. Ok it turned out that the bait was in the van and I was in the car was not a problem since the shops were open.
There was a very strong SW wind but the sea was reasonably calm.
Headed out and turned north. The sea was suprisingly rough despite the initially impression and that coupled with the strong wind made us opt for a mark about 300 yards north of Tynemoth pier. Nicely sheltered from the SE swell but it proved to be an absolute tackle nightmare (around 150 yards W from the lighthouse). The tide picked up and the boat held nicely in the tide against the wind but one whiting and the tackle losses nearly every chuck forced a move.
Up anchored and moved inshore untill the sounder showed a smooth soft bottom. I would say we were about a third of the way along the pier. There is a flat rock shelf exposed at low tide but the bottom just off it is good sandy ground.
The bites came thick and fast with flatties and whiting galore...but no sign at all of cod. Did not really matter what we put on the hook, rag, lug, squid or mussel...we caught fish...but no cod. Its intresting to note that the move of a few hundred yards inshore lost us the tide flow and the boat was swinging all over in the very strong wind.
The wind picked up as did the swell. At times I did not like the look of the breakers coming round the Tyne entrance and was thinking it would be a rough and thankfully short run in when we left the shelter of the piers. Packed up around six with loads of whiting and flatties but nothing worth noting. Was going to post about the potential rough weather on cullercoats and tynemouth beach. When we left there was a good 5ft of swell...but the wind turned westerly so it was short lived.
Better than working though.
Cheers
Dave
