Hello from The Hebrides

This week I am on the Isle of Mull in the Inner Hebrides. The roads were closed today due to the Mull Rally going on so it seemed a good opportunity to get some fishing in. About a mile and a half north of our cottage is a small white sand bay called Port Na Ba. So I headed up there and set up on the end of the left hand point to fish the first four hours of the flood tide. I had a canny session and also saw two seals and an otter !

I set up two bait rods with lug, rag, squid, mackie and raw prawn baits and also did some spinning using an old faithful - zenith 40g spinner. There was plenty of action with the spinning rod and I caught three pollack and three coleys (all undersize) and one mackerel which became a fried mackerel butty when I got back :) Mmm. No luck on the bait rods today. Tomorrow I may head down to Calgary bay at first light depending on how much beer I have tonight :red: Here are some pics....

Try Caliach point, it's the best spot on that bit of coast Mike. You will need to find your way onto the high rocks that look to the North on the point.

Thanks JV, it's on my list of marks to try this week. I only have a couple of hours free tomorrow and that is first thing so I'm going to try the old pier at Calgary Bay or maybe a bit further along the bay from there as Calgary is only 2.5miles from our cottage. Monday I'm fishing Fhionphort rocks while Mrs T and the inlaws visit Ionha. It looks very pollacky along there.

Also try the to of loch nakeal at the roadside where the Cliffs are. It's extremely deep water with plenty of wrasse close in against the rocks but in the drop off who knows what could be lurking around

Loch Nakeal sounds good I'll add it to my list, thanks.

I've just got back from fishing Calgary Bay. There is an old pier about half way along made of stone and partially collapsed. I was fishing off there in total darkness about 6am which is really spooky, when there was a loud hiss behind me. I nearly crapped myself. Another loud hiss and I switched my headlight on and swung around to catch two red eyes then I swung back and lit up a bueatiful big otter only about ten feet from me on the pier. It didn't like the light and slipped over the side into the water. I only caught two small fish but wow the otter was amazing.

I fished the rocks at Fhionphort yesterday with the spinning gear. I was hoping for a pollack but there were none about today though I did catch fourteen coalies :). It was a good session with nice weather and a great view of the island of Iona across the water. I saw two sea eagles too. Here are some pics ....

Yeah the scenery is fantastic and we have been really lucky with the weather - nice sunshine and no wind so flat seas all week. Great for spinning. Here is a pic of the spooky pier mentioned previously taken today but in daylight. I took Mrs Thunderpants with me, she has only been fishing once before. We were both spinning with Zeniths. I caught only the one small codling and she caught eleven fish, three species and a canny pollack of about a pound! Talk about beginners luck :) I got completely thrashed by my own wife :D

You have been lucky with the weather up there like. I love the fishing up there by bloody hate them single track roads that cover the island where ya have to constantly pull over, reverse , wave, reverse, wave again then drive 100yrds to repeat the process resulting in a journey that would take 20 mins takes 3 houra lol

Good report. We are up there on holiday for a week next May 2013. Staying in Tobermory. Wife has given me permission to have a bit of fishing so looks like i,ll be putting the spinning gear in.

Mick.

This is my last report from the Isle of Mull as we are heading home tomorrow. Since our session the other day Mrs Thunderpants has a new found enthusiasm for spinning so the two of us headed out this afternoon to fish Caliach Point on the north west tip of the island. This is a good deep water mark which looks across the sea to the islands of Rum and Eigg. It was a nice sunny day with a small sea on and we arrived about two hours before low water. Mrs T was straight into a fish second cast a nice pollack of 36cm, dead on 1lb. I was slow getting off the mark but pulled one out 46cm 2lb 2oz about an hour into the flood tide. Both of us lost some very big fish on the retrieve too for various reasons which where right rod benders! With about half an hour left I decided to put the float on and try for a wrasse for the species hunt. I baited up with three limpets from the rocks on a 1/0 hook and first cast caught a loveley wrasse 33cm 1lb 8oz. Not sure what type of wrasse but a nice looking fish. So a great afternoons sport. Mrst Thunderpants is now truly hooked and wants to take up fishing and we have fish for tea tonight. :)
