Help wanted with club and shop name

Every ten years or so a group of friends meet up for a weekend of drinking and nostalgia. This invariably involves a quiz in which we all put in questions, etc. Sad I know but when you get to a certain age.......... For my questions I need to know the name of a club and men\'s clothes shop we all used to travel up to Newcastle from Middlesbriugh to visit. The club is \"Something\" a Gogo. What is the the \"Something\" We saw the Rolling Stones in late 1963, also John Lee Hooker, Bo Diddley, the Animals of course and many others. The mens clothes shop is somewhere in the centre - I bought a suede jerkin there like the one Dylan wears on the Freewheeling album cover. Hoping you can help me win a bottle of malt.

John

ive asked a few lads the club was called club was club agogo the shop was burtons we thing

gary

Many thanks, that\'s half a bottle of malt. It wasn\'t Burton\'s, I got my first suit there (in Boro) a Ben Sherman buttoned down collar and a knitted tie. The men\'s shop was somewhere down from some monument, a small shop. I have until the end of the month. For those from the Cleveland area the first of these reunions was in 1973 in a cottage behind the Black Lion (I think it has now gone) in Staithes

Hello John. Dont know about the clothes shop but the club was definitely the CLUB A GOGO. The Animals used to play there regularly and named a track on one of their discs after the club.

Cheers.

Hi Gary.
I just missed seeing them play live when they were at the height of their fame as I was just too young to get into the club venues. They have the same effect on me when I play their records and they are still at the top of the tree as far as I am concerned. During the late sixties, a cuople of mates of mine formed a band and they bought their first amplifiers off the Animals. There was also a guy living in Knotts Flats a couple of years back and he claimed that he taught Hilton Valentine to play the guitar.Whether this was true or not, I dont know but as he was a good guitarist himself it may possibly be true. I read Eric Burdons book a few years back and it was really good. I know that he used to go out with a lass from Laygate and that her brother had done a bit of wrestling on the telly at that time. I think his name was Lindy Calder.

Cheers.

Great, thats it!!!!!!!!!! Many many thanks Gary.

Saw, many, many early 60\'s blues, RnB bands - the GoGo in Newcastle, the Outlook and the Scene in Middlesbrough, the Coatham Jazz club in Redcar. If we\'re laying claim to fame - John Mayall - when Roger Dean was playing lead guitar in the Bluesbreakers- after a gig in the Scene, Middlesbrough - gave me much help in improving my blues harmonica playing.

If Gary hadn\'t got me the name of the shop my backup question was the following sea fishing quesation:

What is a cuddywhifter?

I\'ll give you a clue its not a pendulum caster

John

wot do you mean tc no hair ive got loads in side my head waiting to come out lol im not bold at the minute its on a number 3 so i can get through newcastle airport second last shift at graft hooray. tony could you imagine seeing some of these boys pl;ay .i might put my disc in your auction (joke) i dont even know how my father got .i offerd it back to chas but he refused enjoy the rest of your hols .i see you have have your cap off on that thread

Well, Tony got it. Back casting with the greenheart rods and scarborough reel most anglers cast over the left sholder and control the reel with the right hand. A cuddywhifter was one who cast over the right sholder and controlled the reel with the left hand.

Hendrix was left handed - chord patterns with his right and picked with his left.

Amazingly I saw both the Animals and the Stones last year in Singapore, almost 40 years after seeing them in Newcastle - a small world.

Thanks again, Gary

Funny that I\'m left handed but cast to the left (right hand on the reel)
I believe the reason is that even though you can turn the reel around easily enough the line has to be put on again so you learned how to cast with most reels set up that way.
